We all know the depth of a mother's love
I felt like I had been staring at her for days, never leaving her side since the day we brought her home. Even the times I had to use the bathroom or answer the phone, I would go as fast as I could, my heartbeat racing, terrified something would happen to her in the few minutes she was out of my sight. Logically, I knew nothing would happen, that my husband was always on watch for any sign of danger, but it was like I couldn't help myself.

I found myself sleeping restlessly, wary for the slightest cry that would alert me to my baby's wakefulness. The smallest sound would cause me to bolt upright, swing my feet to the floor, and be halfway across the room before my mind even registered the fact that I was moving. I would often be so anxious for her well-being that I would carry her back to bed with me, laying her on a pillow beside me, marvelling at how her whole body could curl up in the small space and still have room left over.

I was frequently caught between my wish to have her close to me at all times and my desire to show her off to everyone I knew. I played the role of proud parent well. It wasn't long before friends, acquaintances, and strangers alike knew, not only of the new addition to our lives, but also of her eating habits, my concerns for her health, and our plans for how we intended to raise her. It was also rare for them to leave without seeing a picture or two of what I was sure was possibly the most beautiful thing ever created.

I was struck by a feeling of pride whenever I looked at her. Though small, there was a strength about her that impressed me and made me rejoice in her health. Her short brown hair was soft and thick, the same colour as my own. Her wide eyes were a deep green, a colour unlike any I'd ever seen before, making me believe that there couldn't possibly be another colour like it in the whole world.

Now, two kids and three jobs later, my beautiful baby still sleeps on the pillow beside me every night. I still get a sense of pride when she shows off for the neighbours. And I will never stop bragging about my first child, my gorgeous girl, my absolutely brilliant, wonderful tabby cat.
