The Fairy and the Wolf

The Fairy had been summoned by the Wolf King to come into Hazelwood Forest. She was the only one that could perform the small dose of magic to help one of the Wolf Kings subjects.

The Wolf King was a great ruler and held his own magic, but it was too powerful for the small task that would help his people this time.  Instead of doing his great magic on weaker frail members of his pack he called upon the Fae.

The Fae Ruler sent out a fairy with low levels of magic but a great abundance of compassion. She knew the pack. She knew of some of the ailments that threatened them. She knew that most needed a delicate touch while others would need stronger magic that she knew how to find.

The fairy arrived at Hazelwood Forest and laid her eyes on King Timber for the first time. He was a magnificent creature that stole her breath. His eyes glowed and the reds and silver of his fur were unlike any color she had ever seen.

The fairy flew near the king in hopes his kindness would match his beauty. She desperately wanted to please him and have a memory of his smile to take with her when her duties took her away.

As the fairy flew closer the king looked at her from his throne of stone, on a ledge high above the pack, a ledge that jutted out of the forest floor and rose to towering heights, high enough he could watch over his pack and see to their safety. The ledge was high enough for the king to see over his lands.

The fairy could feel the eyes of the king on her skin. Her hair tingled, a miracle with it having been put in a ball atop her head for a tangle free flight. The fairy could imagine touching the fur of the great king and she flew closer than she had been allowed by custom.

The king didn't mind this closeness. He seemed to be as drawn to her as she to him.

King Timber spoke to the fairy and her ears heard the deep rumble of his voice. It took her more than a moment to distinguish the words. The rumble from his voice made vibrations travel from her ears to the tips of her wings.

The King was informing her of her duties. Her magic though small was needed. She had to travel some distance with the weak pack member, tend to his healing and return him well.

The fairy had been certain of her magic before but seeing King Timber in person made her nervous, intimidated a bit, but determined to heal his subject and make him see her worth.

She was so drawn to the king she hoped to be called upon by him again, for her magic or just to be in his presence.

She followed his instructions but felt saddened to leave him even though she had a service to complete. She needed to move quickly, becoming dangerously close to reaching out and touching his hand. That was forbidden.  After the King explained her orders she bowed to him and left the forest. King Timber watched her leave. The king smiled to himself but returned to his duties.

The fairy took the injured wolf to a large spring where the waters had healing properties. She nestled him in the leaves at the edge of the magical waters, sprinkled a little dust in his eyes and let him sleep while his body healed. Flying back with the healthy wolf trotting beside her made her smile. The wolf was happy too.

She was excited to show King Timber she had completed her task. Her mood however, fell to the ground when she entered the forest to find the great king had joined his guard on patrol and was not present. The fairy left the healthy wolf charge and went back to her people. She was tending to other tasks helping in the Isle of Palm when she received word from her head fairy that the king was pleased. She felt light and happy even while surrounded by other beings in need. Her light from within glowed and she was pleased that it made the work more pleasant.

Days passed, then weeks went by before the fairy would see the Wolf King again. She stayed hopeful but knew that there was no chance the king had been effected by her the same way she had by him.

In the world of magic it wasn't uncommon for wolves and fairies to mate. Fairies could take any form they chose. Wolves were powerful beings but not enough alone. The mating of a wolf and fairy always made each stronger. The wolves possessed great  magic of their own but were drawn to the earth magic of the Fae and some fell in love with fairies. But this Fairy? This King? No. That wasn't something this fairy believed could happen. He was strong and powerful and always busy caring for his pack. Even in a world filled with magic, dangers threatened his people. They were his focus. The fairy understood completely.

She focused on healing and taking care of her people. After a time her head fairy sent her back to the Hazelwood Forest. She was once again in front of the great king. She felt his smile. It was contagious. She could feel the tingle in her wings. Her light that had begun to fade was again bright.

She approached the king and listened to his words, took his sick and went about the task of transferring his injured wolf. The king didn't dismiss the fairy as quickly this time. He spoke to her and waited for her to speak to him. She was nervous at first, but when her words came they flowed. She had a conversation with the powerful King Timber. It filled her with joy just to hear his voice, to watch him, to see him move. She thought he was the most beautiful creature created.

She took his charge and went to leave the trail with her magic. She bid him farewell and he smiled at her. At Her! She was ecstatic inside. She was bubbly and happy like never before just from his smile.

After many visits to the Hazelwood Forest the fairy finally spent time with the king. She approached his ledge one evening. The stars must have given her strength because she felt she could speak to him. Clearly he had to know.

The king followed the fairy down a path. His steps smooth and words grand as he.  The fairy knew she was lost to him. No other being in the realm had could ever compare to the Great Timber.

He stopped her and she knew it was just going to be a quick conversation. He couldn't possibly be interested in more but something in the universe wanted to be kind to the fairy for the king asked her for a night together. To talk. To roam. To be. The fairy thought her wings would shatter from the joy filling her. She eagerly said yes before leaving his presence.

The first night under the moon that the fairy spent with the wolf she knew; Knew that he would be the being that stole her guarded heart. She knew that his was the only touch she would ever need to feel.  King Timber was a light in the darkness. He was a powerful warrior yet had a gentle soul.

That night it was clear to the fairy that her heart would be safe with him. He would protect it as she had, maybe more. She spent many more moons with the wolf king. Laughing and learning and openly speaking with the great king. She fell completely in love with him. One night they ventured to the ocean far from the forest where they had met. The wolf and fairy had both shifted to human form. Magic never leaves only changes. The two were comfortable in any form but preferred the human sameness.

They made love under the palms and stars. They spoke for hours, each falling deeper in love.  More time passed. The fairy decided she no longer wanted anything but the king. She had to become better in her magic, study and grow, become great like the king so she would feel herself good enough to spend eternity with him.

The king supported her feelings, always telling her she was already more than good enough; allowing her room to grow and encouraging her endeavors. He was kind and gentle with her. The two made plans for a future.

The King turned the throne over to his chosen leader. He left the Hazelwood Forest for a chance to become more than just a ruler of a pack. Even as the great king he was, he knew the world outside the forest was huge and full of possibilities. He needed to roam free. Not a lone wolf anymore the king settled on the Isle of Palms and the fairy was able to see him more during her travels through the realm.

Soon they were inseparable. Timber admitted to the fairy that he loved her. She already loved him but didn't tell him for fear of being too open too quick. She could not help herself then. The moment he said it all the walls she had carefully constructed toppled to the ground. He had done it.  He took her heart before but now he had her soul as well. She knew the heart was his, if he broke it it would hurt but she would survive, but not her soul. That moment she knew she couldn't live without him. He became her air, her light, her world.

It would take years but the fairy would perfect her magic. She would break the chains that held her to her world. She would fly higher than ever before and roam the world with her wolf by her side.
