Mickey and his twin brother Ricky peered cautiously around the corner. It appeared there was nothing menacing waiting for them in the dark.

“I’m gonna go for it,” Mickey said.

“What? Are you crazy? You know he’s out there just waiting for one of us to do something stupid. You’ll never make it.”

“Maybe, but it’s just something I have to do.”

“Well you be careful. We’ve already lost our brother Billy.”

“I know, I know. You don’t have to keep reminding me.”

Without another word, Mickey stepped cautiously around the corner and crouched down as low as possible. Then, very slowly, he crept silently along the wall. Each step he took made his heart beat faster. By the time he’d gone six feet, he could barely contain the urge to just jump up and run as fast as he could for the prize.

Suddenly, something to his left caught his attention. A slight movement in the shadows. Mickey froze, held his breath and studied every inch of the darkness. When he didn’t see anything, he began to move again and without warning, a large figure loomed above him. The adrenalin surged through him and he took off like a shot, but it was too late. The large, sharp teeth were upon him and he would never claim his prize. The lights came on and Mr. and Mrs. Randolph stood in the kitchen door looking down on their cat.

“See,” Mrs. Randolph said. “I told you the cat would catch that pesky mouse if it ever showed itself again.
