Freedom. It has been the dream of Americans since the beginning, and the dream of countless others who have come to America for a better life. Even in modern America, it is a subtle dream that each and every individual shares and necessarily underlies every other dream. Without freedom, there is no chance to experience, to grow, to learn, to change. Perhaps in selfish terms it can be characterized as the ability to do whatever one wants. In genuine terms, it is a shining opportunity. More incredibly, it is the ability to take those shining new opportunities.
We will never know exactly where our lives will lead us, how intensely we will change as we learn, what sort of obstacles will block our way, or what sort of benevolent souls will help us along, but at the end there will always be a choice with unfathomable effects. Immediate dreams will change, but the dream of freedom, and the freedom to dream, will not.
Presently, my “happily ever after” is to attend the college which I can barely allow myself to think about for fear of becoming too hopeful. Anxiety constantly lurks around the corners of my conscious. Maybe I will be rejected, worse, if I am accepted I will have to decline for the stomach-turning practicality of finances. Life may throw something in my path that is fully unexpected. Ugly or beautiful, at the end of the mystery I will have to make a decision. My dearest dream is to have to freedom to make the decision that I know is best for me. Without this scholarship I will still make the most practical decision for myself, but with the help of this scholarship that decision may be the one I could never safely dream of before. I could dream to be free.
