Unrequited longing
When you speak, your words echo in the hollow shell of my being.
They ricochet off my heart. Each syllable stinging with the pain
Of a feeling so long estranged from me.

Your thoughts & mine, weaved together. In and around each other
Could create a rope strong enough to hoist the sorrow from us both.
A task much too demanding for either to undertake alone.

Your hate lying beside mine could birth a tyrant
The likes of which have never been seen by mere mortals.
Capable of destroying all that we are. All we could be.

The expressions of your face mirror those of my soul
Half-hearted glances in your direction. Never satisfying
The need in me to see you. The need to see myself in another.

Sometimes when the sky is black & silent, the world quiet.
I feel as if you can hear the words forever stuck behind my teeth.
For a brief moment I'm certain they live in you too.

It passes me by. Logic regaining control over my fanciful emotions.
I see you once more as you really are. No longer covered
By the mask my heart so desires you to wear.
