Comma Writing Exercise Lesson #2 |
Once upon a time, (6a)a beautiful princess named Emma(4a), alone in her castle,(4a)decided it would be a mighty thing if she learned more about the things that (4c)the people in her land took for granted. She called on her maidservant to go out and list the all the items that the townspeople took for granted. The following day, (6a)when she received the list, (2)she was appalled by the maidservant's writing, (1)and thus, (?)she knew what she would learn of. At dinner that evening,(6a)she stood up and declared,(?)(5)"Father, (5)mother, (5)and all that are around, (?)I declare my time as of now to be in studies of the written word. Not just the word, (6a)but the common use and misuse of the comma , (1)for I declare to know how it is used correctly. I wish to send for a learned person that shall teach me every tittle. But the misuse of the comma shall no longer be in our kingdom." "You have chosen a good deed,(?)my child. I bid you well." Her father commended her. "Tomorrow we shall send our maidservant to bid Winnie,(?)(3b)the town's most knowledgeble creative writer.(3b) She shall teach you all you need to know. "Oh, (8)Father, (?)thank you for your blessing." She kissed him and her mother on the cheek. --------- The princess awoke to sun rays upon her face and singing birds on her window seal. She jumped out of her bed, (5)ran to her mirror, (5)and began stroking her long, (3a)beautiful, (3a)blond, (3a)wavy hair. She hurried to dress herself to prepare herself for a new day. Then a servant arrived at her door. "Madam Emma, (?)your father bid me come up and tell you, (?)he has sent for Winnie, today." "Oh, (8)how wonderful. Thank you" "If I may, (6a)I would like to warn you, (?)Emma." "Warn me, (?)why?" "Well, I've heard things about this Winnie. She's smart and all, (1)but I've heard she carries a ruler around with her when she teaches." The maidservant whispers. "Oh, (8)it can't be that bad. But even so, (7)I've got to learn this some way or another, (?)with or without the ruler." Another maidservant walked up to the door. "Madam Emma, (?)You have a guest here to see you by the name of Winnie." "Thank you, (?)bring her to the library." The princess walks to the library to meet her guest of honor. "Thank you, (?)Ms. Winnie for coming on such short notice." The princess greets looking down at her books and her ruler. "It is my pleasure Madam. It is my understanding that you seek instruction on the written language. Am I correct?" "Well, (?)yes. However, (7)I seek to know more about commas, (?)the use and misuse." Emma could not keep her eyes off of the ruler. "That is a great thing to be inquiring about." Winnie wondered why the princess was not looking at her. "Is something bothering you?" "No,(8)not at all. I'm just, (8)well, (8)curious why you need that ruler." "Oh,(8)ha ha,(8)this ruler, (?)I'm sure I won't need this today. You seem like a good student." "Oh,(8)I am. I promise." Emma said (6b)wondering if Winnie would ever use a ruler on a student. Winnie sets out a list of rules for commas. Emma and Winnie review and practice the rules throughout the day. After a few hours, Emma has a solid grasp on proper comma usage. She is very thankful for Winnie's support, (1)and she invites Winnie to dine with the Royal Family. |
