Prologue

The Master

I opened my eyes and saw the moon, shining brightly above the mountains. I didn’t notice how long was I staring but it gave me peace inside me. There was a surrealistic mood to the solidarity and remoteness of this place. I felt as if I'm in my own world; me, the moon and the ground I lay. I wish this peace would last forever.

I started to sit up, but then I smelled it. The scent came from afar but getting nearer. This is the right time for me to be running this instant, escape to someplace. But my body can’t seem to move. Or is it that I don’t want to move?

You have to. I held my head with both hands. My temples were throbbing, as if drums were beating in my head.

Too late.

I can’t control myself anymore. Not now. Not when I’m on the verge of losing my sanity.

“Master, please for your own good.”

Merde! You picked a damn time to bother me,” I growled. I was beginning to breathe rapidly. Get a grip man.

“I apologize but it is my job to take care of the master,” the servant replied.

“You certainly doing a terrific job,” The smell made me dizzy so I shut my eyes. “Go away! Leave me be!” My whole body was trembling and my hands were clutched into fists.

The servant didn’t move. Finally he shifted. Then he was gone. Still it lingers, fresh, warm and very tempting. Damn.

I opened my eyes and stared hard what lies before me. I felt wild and crazy. I felt beaten. As if my only resort is to surrender. Surrender to temptation. My years of experience and training were made a mockery from the way I reacted. I couldn’t help it. The need was stronger. I don't have enough will to fight it any longer.

Then that was it; something snapped in me. Everything got so blurry. I don’t know what happened after that, but I felt very hot and alive. Next thing I knew, I was panting and my hands were soaked with ruby-like color that looks exquisite from the brightness of the moon.

I took a long, deep breath. Do I feel at peace?

Shaking my head, I gazed at the gleaming moon. Who am i kidding?

Chapter 1

The Heroine

Ring. Ring. Ring.

Hi, Ru here! Sorry can’t be on the phone right now. You know the drill.

Beep.

“Deiker! Where the hell are you? Pick up the phone, dammit! Where’s my interview? Get your ass down here in half an hour or you can kiss your job good bye, young lady!”

Ruby Deiker woke up a start, grabbed her alarm clock: 8:06, and groaned, “Oh hell.”

She rubbed her temples and shot right out the bed then rushed to the bathroom. Stripped her Hello Kitty pajamas and went inside the shower. “Waahh! Hot! Hot!” she yelped. Stepped out of the tub and fetched a towel wrapping it around her body. “Oops! Forgot to shampoo!” She dashed right back to the tub, and then halted. “No time!” She started towards her bedroom, took a hesitating step but ran back to the tub and washed her long golden, copper curls. When she’s done, she went to the bedroom and rummaged her closet for something to wear. She glanced at her bed and saw Poppy, her cream-colored Labrador retriever, staring back at her.

“What?! It’s the alarm clock’s fault!” she exclaimed.

“And you!” Pointing at him, “You should’ve woke me up! Hmp!” Poppy slouched.

She turned and continued digging for clothes.

Woof! Woof! Yeah, yeah! Blamed the alarm clock, why not blame the poor, innocent dog? Poppy whined.

“It’s not my fault I have a grumpy monster as a boss,” she muttered.

Poppy barked in agreement. Narf! I concur.

Ruby slipped on a red brassier and undies and chose a navy blue knee-length skirt and a white, camisole chiffon blouse. “Remember Poppy always dress to impress,” wagging her finger at her dog. “So that you’ll get less scolded,” she chuckled. Ruby sauntered about her vanity mirror and chose a pearl earrings and golden charm bracelet, then tried on her red Jimmy Choos shoes.

Looking at the cheval glass, “Perfect!”

Glancing across the room, “Now Poppy, whaddya’ think?” she asked while twirling around.

The dog barked.

“I’ll take that as a big yes. Come ‘ere boy!”

She scratched behind Poppy’s ears. “Now be a good boy while mommy’s off to work, ok?” She got a purr as a response.

Then Ruby went gloomy. “That is, if I survive His Highness’ blistering sermons.” Poppy looked at his owner. “But no worries, old fellow. Not a boss from hell can stop me from pursuing my dreams.” She glanced at the wall clock, “Oh shit! 8:30!”

Kissing his nose, she said, “Watch the house okay, buddy? I’ll bring you some treats when I get back!”

Poppy jumped and woofed.

She rushed to the door, gave Poppy a one last flying kiss then locked it.

Ruby’s day couldn’t get any better. That’s at least what she thinks.♥
