based on "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy about a Soldier
Quick note:
This is my first peace, its a fan fiction that I wrote for school based on the novel by American writer Cormac McCarthy. I know, i know people hate fan fic's but well this is the first thing i've submitted to this site. My class was asked to write something about "The Road" weather it be a quick essay of any type or a short story that displayed our writing abilities, i chose to try and stick close with McCarthy's style of writing of quick, short and blunt sentiences with very little if any punctuation, i was amazed when this got me an A though i'm not sure weather its worth it. any way hope you enjoy

"The Soldier"

Lighting scorched the skies, it was though the heavens them selves had split asunder and unleashed its ethereal rage upon the world.

The soldier looked up his eyes wide with fear and anger.
Damn!
He swore
Not now, I’ll have to find cover...
The thunder echoed through out the arid ash planes, the wind was beginning to pick up, in the distance a great stormed brewed.
Dressed in rags and what was left of his military uniform the soldier dashed to a near by cliff side that stood tall, it’s shadow deep and foreboding, the ledge providing enough cover for him to hide.

The wind howled loud like the cry of a wounded wolf, it was frightening.
There’s someone over there look Papa
Said the boy
Can we help?
No!
Said the man
Please…
No!
Okay

There’s some one over there
Thought the soldier
Should I?
Light stuck the ground before him accompanied by a thunderous crack the parched ground lay smoking

Please Papa he might die
The boy pleaded
The man looked down at the boy, shear despair, sadness and determination in his little eyes
Okay, we’ll help

Over here!
Cried the soldier

The man looked at the shadowy figure as it began to wave its hands, what ever noise it was making was muffled by the roar from the skies above.
We better run or we’ll get struck by lighting
Said the man
Will it hurt?
Asked the boy
Yes
Okay
Leave the cart here
Okay
The man reached for his gun
Here you take it
No!
You promised
Okay

They’re coming
Thought the soldier
They’re coming, who’s that
In the corner of his eye he saw what he hoped he would not.

The group gathered at the top of the hill, they crouched low; one of them sniffed the air then growled, another howled and pointed two the group and the base of the cliff face.

Oh no!
Said the soldier
What?
Asked the man
Marauders
Said the boy
Oh god!
God wont help you now, stay behind me
The soldier pushed the boy and the man behind him he then shouldered his M16 battle-rifle.
Cover you ears

The group raced toward the threesome on all fours they bounded and leaped towards them snarling and growling, one fell to a single shot to the head another stopped and howled as it took a shot to the leg it limped as fast as it could it was hungry
The leader of the group charged onwards the ashen ground flying through the air as it charged.

Run!
Yelled the soldier
Run!

The boy was the first to move, the man followed
He stopped
What’s you name?
He yelled over the noise

Andrew!

The boy and the man ran as fast as they could then under the thunder and lighting they her a screech and the final sounds of gunshots

The storm had ended…
