About the state of our Nation and its place in the World. |
It Used To Be It used to be, we were a People Who stood together, proud and tall Instead of, with the petty differences That makes us all, look very small. It used to be, we all were Patriots Who defended, freedom of speech We listened to each other’s views Not, what all those nutcases preach. It used to be, we took the time To find, what was truth or a lie Now, we don’t want to learn the facts And, we don’t even seem, to try. It used to be, we knew our neighbors Helped one another, when we could We were, a part of a community And proud of, our neighborhood. It used to be, someone could work And make, a fairly decent living Pay the taxes just like everyone But, at a fairer rate, of giving. It used to be, we made things Most of them, that, we used Once produced to a high standard Until our great system, was abused. It used to be, we had healthcare Which was by far, number one Now, we’re rated thirty-seventh Look at what, the greed, has done! It used to be, we had few homeless Now, there are thousands, everywhere Whole families, out on the street And nobody seems to care. It used to be, most all would Serve Matter of fact, it was expected When you were picked by the Draft You would go, unless rejected. It used to be, we honored Veterans Sent Troops to war, for a reason World War II, the last one, just The rest, approaching, treason. It used to be, we voted for the best Someone who, would truly, Represent Who weren’t bought and sold by lobbyists And who at least, had good intent. It used to be, our government And other agencies, were trusted Then big business, controlled them And now, we’re almost busted. It used to be, all our freedoms Were protected by, our Constitution Now there are those, working for All those Rights, dissolution. It used to be, our Presidents Were shown, respect, from all Nowadays, some people hope They’ll fail, for their downfall. It used to be, our great Country Was the envy, of all the rest At one time, we were looked up to Reflecting Freedom, at its best.
