Chapter One of 'Cadet', a science fiction story
         "Kay-det!"
Tan jumped at the loud yell from the corridor. The tightly rolled t-shirt he was holding flew out of his hand, bounced off of the wall, landed on the bunk, and bounced back into the open suitcase Tan had just removed it from.
The man in the doorway laughed, "You look like you're wound as tight as your luggage! Why don't you come with me and loosen up?"
"Yes, sir," Tan replied, "What needs to be done?"
The man turned and walked down the corridor, not looking back to see if Tan was following. "What needs to be done," he said, "is you need to make sure I get back before the ship leaves."
Tan locked his door quickly and followed the short, skinny man out of the crew house. The man was dressed in loose fitting khakis and large black work shoes.
