Written for a school project.
A module in school required us to produce a story book for children as the final project. My partner and I wanted a completely original creation, hence the poem.

Mike said to his two best friends one day
"Lucy and Ben, come over today!
I’ve got a new chest full of things to play!"

They nodded and off to his house they went,
Getting excited as they neared his bend,
Mike always had toys of the latest trend!

When they finally reached, they ran up the stairs,
Pass the bedrooms, pass his grandma’s glares.
Into Mike’s big bedroom with only his toys he shares.

Lucy looked around, but saw nothing new.
Ben searched the room, and found nothing too.
Mike laughed until his face turned blue!

"It’s not in the corner; it’s not near the stairs,
It’s in the big, old and heavy looking chest!
The both of you would fail if this was a test!"

Unabashed, they gathered around,
What was inside it? What would be found?
Ben knocked on its lid, and it made a hollow sound.

"Open it! Open it! We can’t wait!"
They implored Mike, their impatience great.
And so he did, slowly...slowly...

It was full of HATS!
Of all shapes! All sizes! All types!

Mike picked up three hats that fell on the floor,
"Is this is? Is there nothing more?"
Lucy and Ben couldn’t help but implore.

"Choose a hat and put it on!" said Mike.
Turn the page to see what they liked!
(Oh, and after they played with the hats, they went to bike!)

Mike chose the cowboy hat!
Lucy picked the clown hat!
Ben went for the chef hat!

Counting to three, they put their hats on,
What would happen now that the hats were worn?
This was more exciting than being born!

Mike opened his eyes, and he was on a horse!
Lucy was surprised when someone called her Boss!
Ben saw a meal that was 10-in-course!

On his chest was a shiny Sheriff Badge,
She was the head clown in a circus called Fledge,
He was a chef with cutlery on every ledge!

He rode into town on his horse called Gruff,
She was happily making the audience laugh,
He was opening jars which were quite tough.

He caught bandits and thieves and those who broke the law,
She had fun doing cartwheels and throwing pies galore
He was done with his cake, and pleased with what he saw

They laughed and had the fun only good friends can,
Yet all too soon, it had to come to an end,
For it was time to go home for Lucy and Ben.

They bid Mike and his family farewell and good night,
And hurried home while it was still bright,
Smiling all the way, filled with happiness and light.

Now, if you could pick out a hat of your own,
What would you pick out of the many hats shown?
