about my names, as the title inplies |
My facebook name has raised a lot of eye brows, from those who want to know what the name means to those who cannot believe it’s my name, to my brothers who claim they never knew I was called Anika. Ok…let me introduce myself, my names are Sarah Gloria Anika Adankala Angai Angai: is my surname and it means ‘to gather’ Sarah: well, it’s my official name, that is the name on all my documents and stuff, the name my friends from school know me with. My Grandfather named me Sarah and has never called me with any of my other names for as long as I can remember, he pronounces it SIRAH, with a strong Rukuba accent. Gloria: my sweet mama named me Gloria, its my domestic name, most of my family and ‘angua’ friends call me Gloria…there are times that people knock on my gate and say they are looking for Sarah and they get sent back…..true story. Anika (kisa ahas): which literarily means ‘new name’…it’s the name that my husband and in-laws are supposed to call me with…… why? Traditionally, it’s disrespectful for ones husband and in-laws to call her with the same name as her parents….so at birth a Rukuba girl gets two names. NEAT!!!! Adankala: that is the tribal name my family calls me with….that is my name, you know, the other one….it means charcoal…..a friend of mine thinks its ‘exotic’ ……I don’t share his views…I think its weird to give someone a name that means charcoal….but what can I do? Feel free to address me with any of MY names…they are all mine and I love them all-even the one that means charcoal…. |
