The horror that stalks you in the dark. Two poems or one?
Monster & Man

MONSTER
Through the still jungle air,
I fly in the darkness,
Tuned in to life below,
Searching with all senses.

I seek to quench an urge,
Set deep in my nature.
So, towards fresh, warm blood,
My wings take me closer.

Ah! I detect breathing.
It sounds not far away.
My thirst is ignited.
Time to meet today’s prey.

I spot it on the ground.
Before it pays me heed,
I swoop down on its flesh,
And now ... to make it bleed.

Ripping its skin apart
Uncorks a stream of blood.
What taste! What joy! What bliss!
Deep, I drink the red flood.

Aargh! I’m under attack.
Why is all going black...

MAN
The track winds into the darkness,
Stretching distant and past my sight.
I numb the fatigue and move on.
My long journey must end tonight.

Countless miles lay tread behind me.
In hills, vales, forests and foam.
Every step hurts more than the last,
Yet each takes me closer to home.

But no more can I take right now.
My stamina’s white flag is raised.
I settle down for a little rest,
Before I continue with haste.

I only hope I am not near
A dacoit’s lair or creature’s den.
Which would be a worse way to go,
Killed to be looted or eaten?

Pushing such morbid thoughts aside,
I close my eyes and calm my mind.
But after mere moments of rest,
A dread noise erupts from behind.

A noise which brings madness to men.
Made by two diabolic wings,
Feared all across its dominion,
For the death and horror it brings.

It is upon me! My blood flows...
SWAT! Got it! God damn mosquitoes.
