just an idea i had revised: 6/16
Haru felt as if he was being tugged at, trying to be wisped away to someplace unknown, but he did not want to go, he was care-free here, happy even, as he watched the sunlight flicker behind his eyelids. With out even opening his eyes Haru knew where he was, the feeling of belonging gave it away. Every petal of every flower, every leaf of all the maples and oaks and ashes, every breath of all the living creature surrounding him, welcomed him, he was wanted here, he was a friend to this ancient forest that was his favorite place in the world; he was in his haven.
A breeze playing with the leaves letting the light from high above shine through the many layers of oak, ash, and maple, giving life to the lower vines and ferns living amongst them, water skipping over age old rocks smoothed by the years, chirping of birds both near and far, the sound of the plants all around growing, and even the breath of earth herself, caused the forest to sing of life and happiness. Haru did not recall coming to this place, nor did he recall how long he had been laying there, content with watching the sun create a miniature light show behind his eye lids and listening to the forest’s singing, it was as if he had always been here and always would be, Haru knew this was not true but the forest's melody gave him peace and he did not worry about these trivial details as he let the sweet carrel carry him away.
Haru was among the forest now, the feeling of belonging became more intense as he swirled with the leaves and flowed with the brook, he heard the cheery music from the song birds, encouraging him to continue; he was happy to comply, and danced as the forest danced with him. He swayed and the trees, rock solid and steady against the winds, joined him swaying as easily as the water flowed through the wood each day, the flowers bloomed and he was full of life ready to bring color to the world. As he twirled and smiled the sweet music from the many birds amongst the branches of the aged trees continued to grow louder and even more beautiful then anything Haru could imagine coming from any living thing. They were happy. These amazing creatures were all happy that he, Haru, just another human, was there with them, and in turn he was happy too.
Haru spread his arms out and turned his face to the heavens and took it all in; the trees, the flowers, the stream, the birds, and all the other living things that were growing and breathing around him, and he laughed, his laugh pure and light came straight from the heart and joined perfectly with the forest's song. His laughter continued even as he fell back closing his eyes once more to see the sun that somehow penetrated the branches of the old trees from behind his eye lids. When they opened again Haru gasped in awe he tried and failed to regain himself, the branches above glowed with a divine light that Haru thought fit the forest beautifully. He knew that the illusion was just merely the sun coming around the branches but the knowledge didn’t stop the sight from adding to the magic Haru felt from this place. He sat up and turned around to see more of this heavenly wood, only to gasp again, before him toward the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, the most ancient tree of them all. Haru knew with out thinking and did not question that this was where it had started, where all life of this wood had come from, the heart of the forest. And yet, this magnificent tree that sent awe although out Haru's body had not a single leaf, but just one single red rose on the highest branch. He wanted to be with this amazing tree, it called to him; he gently stepped forward and placed a hand on the bark of the trunk…..
At his lightest tough the tree burst into flame, Haru's eyes widened in sheer horror, he watched the killer jump from tree to tree, spreading quickly and deadly, he covered his ears as the sweet melody of the birds turned into the screeching and crowing of danger as the branches that they once roosted on fell into the fire with a crack, he looked down as the previously unseen creatures of the forest snaked around his legs trying to escape death Haru watched and he knew that far to few of the rabbits and squirrels he saw would survive, the stench of smoke, burning wood and scorched feathers and fur came to him as he looked back to those that could not run from the inferno the last thing he saw before he shut his eyes tight to block the awful sight was the one single red rose in all it glory suronded by flames slowly burn till it was only ash. Hopelessness consumed him, there was nothing he could do, Haru screamed into the flames, the air around him now thick with smoke. What had he done?
