Hubert's response to Roderick's desperate letter.
My Dear Roderick,

There is only so much I can empathize. I tell you, you have to get out more! You simply must. Before what little muscle tone you have withers away from disuse like bicycle tyres with the air let out. I say you spend too much time brooding in that drab study of yours. Buy a new suit man, for heaven's sake! Get a haircut, trim that beard. How long is it since you've thrown a decent dinner party?

What happened four years ago, happened four years ago. It's time to move on with your life. I appreciate that the rebuilding of our friendship is so important to you, but your little spiel on 'boundaries' chilled me somewhat. Now remember, it doesn't do to reopen old wounds. I'm really quite happy with the situation as it is now. No good can come of trying to shake things up. If you feel lonely, read a book. I can't always be there to fret and fuss over you.

As a man of reason, I must say I do believe in coincidence. Yet at the same time there are certain events in my history that I am quite sure were fated to happen. Such as when they found us beneath the banana tree all those years ago. You do remember that?

Roderick, Roderick, try not to withdraw into yourself too much. The separation you feel must surely be in your mind. Remember that I'm not a creation, I really am a living, breathing person and I do have a life of my own. And yes, you are a significant part of my life, that will never change, but your dependence on me strikes me as a little extreme at times. Do try and live your life a little. Stop watching yourself. You might find that you don't need me as much as you think.

Yours Ever,
Hubert
