About choices a woman made in a cave. |
The World Is Black Even though she didn’t know how she came in she knew that there was only one way out. Across a broken bridge which stretched across a hole of blackness. Looking around, she thought she must have come that way. There was no other way in. Then she looked up. She saw a hole, but her rope wasn’t there. She went into caves all the time as part of her job although she had never been in one like this. She looked at the bridge once more. She put one foot in front of her other one but then backed back up. The bridge was swaying even though the air was so still. Before she could think about it she stepped forward again and she was going across the bridge. As she stepped she tried to ignore the swaying, even though she almost fell off the bridge every time it changed directions. She stumbled but got her balance again. Half way across, about fifteen steps from the other side, she heard the ropes on the side of the bridge breaking. She turned around and saw it tearing. Running to get off the bridge before was easier said than done. Every time she landed she fell into the rope siding. The rope was about to give way so she jumped forward to the edge and clambered up just as the rope broke and the bridge fell into the hole. She looked up at the hole she had come in from, again, and saw the rope hanging near the ground on the other edge. She stared at it and tried to find a way back over to it. “How did I not notice it?” the girl asked herself. She looked at the door and walked in, not hesitating. Through that door there were two more doors. Another choice. But now she knew how deceiving this place was. She looked into them. Neither showed any sign of freedom, but she knew one would be the right choice and one would be wrong. The girl sat on the ground, unsure of what to do next. Two doors were there, before her now. Each one seemed to call to her. She stood up, walked to the one on the left and looked in. Inside she saw things moving but it was so dark, she couldn’t make out what they were. She moved over to the door on the right, and looked in. Through that door there was a hallway, lighted by lanterns hanging on the wall, and on the other end was a door with a question mark on it. She didn’t know which one to choose, but she knew she had to pick one to get out of the mysterious place she found herself in. They both seemed to call to her and both had the same amount of uncertainty. Not able to decide, she walked away and looked at them both in one glance. The things were still moving in the left one but the right door was changing. The lights in the hallway were growing dimmer. “I better decide one door, fast,” the girl said to herself, glancing at the left door again. She turned to her right and walked toward the hall. The lights grew dimmer again. The same thing happened as with the bridge, she just began stepping forward. She stepped into the unknown hallway… Then the world was black. |
