chapter 10 in my series of shorts about Renave |
Softly falling whispers surround the picnic in a kaleidoscope …a beautiful and silent reminder of the season…the warm breeze tells of a summer still clinging on and unwilling to release it’s hold on the world…laughter is heard often as stories are passed from one to another…times remembered and new memories established…a little on the outskirts we see Renave…participating fully but also just admiring those around him and taking pleasure in the mirth that is shared by all present…as the picnic draws to a close they gather there belongings and traipse out to their cars where they all head their separate ways with words of well wishing and promises to see each other soon…and in fact for most that soon would be that evening as they all planned an outing that evening…at the designated hour the group begins trickling in…each a little wary at first unsure of who is before them whispers of names are then followed by rowdy laughter at the indistinguishablity of each member of the party…those that arrive first set up a pact to scare those who arrive post the set time and they scatter to various hiding spots…as Renave arrives he sees the vehicles of those he knows he’s meeting but he sees not a single individual…as he gets out of his car he looks around warily searching for a familiar face…a noise from above catches his attention and he looks up to see a beautiful bird…a bird of which he has never seen before in his area…it is a pale blue with violet eyes…he knows that because of its light colouring he is able to see it…and the noise he heard was unlike any chirp or tweet he had ever heard prior…it was similar though to the voice of a girl he had known once long ago…a girl who had stolen his heart…so mellifluous it would tame the wildest of beings…all that had known her were never rough or crude around her…she had a presence that made you feel special…those were beautiful days and Renave’s face alights with love and joy at the beautiful memory…each crease and line on his face radiates with the emotions associated at remembering…some who glimpsed him even said his eyes seemed to become lights as they radiated before him…in fact this phenomenon held everyone in a trance and they nearly forgot why they were in hiding…and with one look at his transfixed façade they had not the heart to instill fright upon that lovely canvass…and they all slowly emerged and clumped together and met Renave with smiles as he returned to his present state of being…he too was soon laughing at the spectacle before them all…all were transformed for the nights events and soon they headed off to their task…they huddle around the first of many destinations…a brave soul reaches out and lands upon the door a resounding rap that soon brings to the door a kind old woman who gasps in false surprise and horror at those who disturb her evening…with loud and boisterous sincerity they cry out “Trick-or-Treat!!!!!”…to which this matron replies “Well children I do have some treats for you if you promise no tricks upon such a lovely night as this”…the group nods vigorously muttering promises to leave her home alone if treats are given…she passes out candied apples to the joy of all those gathered…after the sincerest thank yous they proceed on to the next house…many hours later and with bags full of treats they compile their earnings and start the divvying up process…they all take a small amount to themselves before they gather the rest into small packages that they decorate…after this they disperse for the night as it is now quite late and they have much to do the following day…as dawn restores the warmth to the land those who had transformed the night before returned to their former states and gathered for a quick breakfast where they relived the night before…quickly washing down the meal with various drinks of juices and water they gather the packages assembled from the night before…they pile into one of the members’ van and drive to a rundown house that looks like it holds nothing of importance…but as the members enter the front door they are met with squeals of joy and are soon surrounded by clamoring children each trying to get a hug and the slightest amount of attention from each individual…soon they have the children calmed down and they begin to disperse the treats among them making sure an equal amount is given to each…the foster mother comes in and offers them refreshments but is quickly declined as they had just eaten…they spend the whole day with the children to give the parents a much needed break to catch up on housework and finally for an evening out by themselves…the children had a great time and the parents were most appreciative to the help and the treats…the group left with full hearts and grins that would last for days…it was the best all hallows eve they had spent together…they hoped for many more to come for there is nothing better than friendships and gifts of love |
