THE NIGHT NICK WOKE UP AND FOUND HIS WIFE DEAD
"Goodnight my love." Jayna whispered softly as she kissed Nick. It was two a.m. and she had just gotten home. Nick had tried to wait up for her since ten but she never came home like she said she would. They had an argument earlier in the day about something that made Jayna angry and caused her to walk out. Jayna undressed in the darkness of the room and jumped into bed under the blanket naked. Nick wasn't really sleeping, he had heard the door slam when Jayna entered downstairs and heard every footstep as she made her way up the stairs. He was about to turn around to put his arm around her when she removed the blanket and stood up. Nick opened his eyes a little bit and stared at her. She stood there in the darkness staring back at him and neither of them had any idea that were were both looking at each other. Nick noticed the outline of her body, all the curves and spots he had touched before. He stared at her body, remembering that only a few days ago they had made love in the shower and then moved to the bed. He remembered how afterwards they had held each other and whispered so many sweet words for countless hours and the night had went by so fast. Why did they have to argue? It was something that could have been resolved. It should have been resolved because no one should walk away from a situation angry without resolving it. Nick knew it was his fault and he felt bad. He was mad at himself for doing what he did and his excuse wasn't convincing enough for her and that was why she was so angry at him. It wasn't the first time he had done it but her never thought she would find out. The clouds cleared in the sky and the moonlight came through the cracks of the curtain behind Jayna. Nick closed his eyes so that she didn't see he was awake but he knew that she was still staring at him. Nick suddenly felt her lips press against his for a few seconds. "I love you." He heard her whisper as he felt her pulling her lips away. He wished she didn't move because he had always loved her lips. They were so soft and gentle. Nick wanted to open his eyes and tell her he loved her too but he didnt know if she was still upset. With his eyes closed, he wondered if she was still staring at him and for the ten quiet minutes that he laid there wondering with his eyes closed, he realized that maybe she was trying to wake him up to talk, or maybe make love because she was standing there naked glowing with the moonlight. Nick opened his eyes and she gone. He didn't hear her walk away or even hear the bedroom door open. It was like she just disappeared into the darkness. Nick pulled the blanket off slowly and sat up. He looked around and saw no signs of her. He quickly got out of bed and flicked the switch on. The lights came on and right there on the floor where her clothes were scattered, Nick saw the naked body of the love of his life lying on the floor covered in blood. He ran over to her and got on his knees. There in the center of her chest was a knife pushed all the way in. All he could see was the black handle of it sticking out of her heart. In her hand was a piece of paper with blood scattered on it. Nick checked to see if she was breathing, placed his ear on her chest to check if her heart was beating, checked her neck for a pulse, but nothing. She was gone, he knew it right away. Nick fell back against the bed and stared at the paper in her hand. He grabbed it and unfolded it.

MY DEAREST NICK:

For the six years that we've been married, I have kept a secret from you and the reason I kept it was to avoid hurting you. You see my love, I have enjoyed every single day of being your wife, every single kiss, every single hug, every single word that ever came out your mouth, every single time we made love. There was not one single day that I regretted being married to you and none of this was your fault. I have loved you from the first day we met, but that all changed when I found out that my one true love is my one true enemy. I didn't recognize you at first but after the first two years of getting to know you, you life and your background and finding your old school records under the bed one day, I realized how horrible my life had become. I have never told you but when I was thirteen I went to this catholic school where I was raped in the hallways by this guy. Now that I'm 28, that day has haunted me every single day of my life and I wanted nothing more than to find that guy and see him die. That guy is you Nick. I found out that you had your name changed after college and when I realized it was you, I hated myself for loving you, for making love to you and enjoying it. It was too late though because I couldn't stop myself from loving you and though I never knew why you did that to me, I didn't care anymore. I knew I had to make you suffer. I know seeing me dead is painful for you and that might seem like we're even now but that wasn't my plan. My plan was to not only kill myself but to poison you this morning when I cooked you breakfast, right before we had the argument about you secretly seeing other women. Yes Nick, right now as you read this, there's poison in your body and before this night is over, you will die. I killed myself because you love me and because watching the person you love die isn't enough pain to put you through for what you did to me. Not only do you have to see me dead, but you have to join me.
ALWAYS: Jayna.

Nick crumbled the paper in his hand and leaned over and kissed Jayna on the forehead. "I love you too." He whispered into her ear. Nick took a few seconds to decide if he was really poisoned and if so, maybe he should call the ambulance and go check it out. He walked over to the phone and picked it up but there was hesitation. He didn't dial 911; instead he stared at Jayna with tears falling from his eyes. He wished she hadn't killed herself so that he might have a chance to explain everything to her. He dropped the phone and lay on the floor next to her. "This is too painful for me angel, I know you can't hear me but if somehow you can, please listen. I am Nick and I do love you and this guy that did this to you in school wasn't me. I have a twin brother and we both had the same name. He went to a catholic school and I remember him telling me he raped this girl one day but that was so long ago that it was out of my mind. I changed my name because we both looked alike and people were always confusing us and it made me angry. It wasn't me angel, I swear. I do love you and I will join you but I won't wait any longer." Nick gave her another kiss, this time on her lips, then he pulled the knife out of her heart and stuck it through his chest all the way in. He threw his arm around Jayna and rested his head on her chest and slowly and slowly as the night went by and the sun came up, somewhere, Jayna and Nick were together and happy.
