“The Legend of BabyCat and Buddee”
from “Tales of Catuary”

She was a double agent, and he knew he had to stop her. He must capture her and bring her to justice. If it meant he had to kill her, he would. If it meant he too had to die, so be it. But he, the great knight, the brave prince, would find her and stop her one way or the other.

He had chased her for a year and a day. He had stalked her through jungle, and bog and swamp. He had trailed her over cold mountain passes, and through deep long valleys where swift rivers ran. He had dogged her paw steps in huge cities and tiny villages, but she had always managed to escape. But time was running out for the elusive and dangerous moll.

This time… this time he KNEW he had her. Trapped she was in the dim, dark alley behind the tavern. Sitting astride his horse of alabaster, he could just see her blood red cloak, as she pressed deeper into the niche in the wall, waiting. He too sat waiting, waiting for the perfect moment. His quarry, this enemy of the people, deserved his respect. She was cunning and intelligent, and had fought a brave but losing battle. And as a knight, he would not stoop to low trickery. He would capture her in grand style. And so he waited.

And what were her thoughts?

He had come at last. The brave prince almost had her in his net. But she had one more trick up her sleeve. She had one great secret that he had not guessed.

She loved him.

She loved him with all heart, and soul and mind. And soon this wonderful adversary would be hers.

Slowly she let the hood of her cape fall back. Slowly she looked out from her hiding place. Green eyes met gold, and the love in the look held them both. And in that moment the great knight failed. For he knew he could no more kill her than he could kill himself.

Quickly he rode down the alley, and she leaped upon the horse behind him. Then he spurred his steed onward, and out into the desert, riding as if all the demons of hell were chasing them. At last they came to the Oasis of the Three Palms. And there they stayed, hidden safely away in the desert, fugitives from the law.

Would they ever be free again?

There was one thing he did not know. The government had lied to him. She was innocent.
