Wow. I am new to this site but I have made it a point to read a few pieces each day since I joined and I have to say, this is the best thing I have read so far. It hits close to home because it reminds me a lot of my own grandfather (whom I have never met but have heard countless stories about). My mother has battled depression throughout her life from having had to deal with her fathers abuse; my uncle, though not in prison like your characters brother, has mental problems and it seems he cannot go one day without mentioning how horrible his father was. My mother is the better-adjusted of the two and she refuses to have anything to do with her father. My uncle, on the other hand, has spent some time with my grandfather in recent years. He is a used up and sad old man, not the imposing figure he once was. And he has had to live with himself and his actions all of these years..... I cannot recall anyone ever talking about WHY he might have done the things he did. I like the part where your protagonist says "I almost became you." It makes me wonder if my grandfather himself had been abused and was only taking on the shape of his father before him... In any case it's quite sad. But the best part of your story is the ending where we see the main character trying to forgive, breaking the cycle and beginning the process of healing. Great work!
