The only time I don't rate what I read is when it confuses me. Sometimes I just don't get it, and have no way of explaining that to the writer. I hate doing that, but I don't see any way around it.
You know how sometimes you see or read something that's really sad, and you can almost control your reaction to it, until you speak out loud about it? That's how this made me feel. I actually started out reading it aloud, but the further I went, the more I started to stumble. Not because the writing was difficult, but because the lump in my throat was growing and growing....
I stopped reading out loud when they said they had no room for her. Gut-wrenching. That's what it was for me. To imagine a woman so beat down by her life, having the courage, without the strength, to even ask them to help her. It was almost more than I could take.
There are many great points throughout, that made me pause, but none moreso than that last sentence.
This is my morning, evening, and night: staring at the wall until he comes back home and bores me to sleep with his heavy, pointless breathing.
That's such a sad story. I'm sorry to hear that you had to live through something like that. And for your dad to cover like he did had to be double the betrayal. Man.
Thanks for sharing this story. I believe firmly that we should share the atrocities of life with others(through storytelling), be they our own personal experiences, or something we've seen or heard. That's the only way to keep the ugliness in the light, with the hopes that someone somewhere will hear and know that they're not alone, and surviving is possible.
This one made me pause, but in a good way. I work in a hospital, in the SICU, so I see the worst this particular city has to offer. So God as a tree definitely works for me.
Damn that stupid Darren! LOL You said we'd be mad at him...:)
I enjoyed this story very much. It has me wanting to know what happens next. He has to go after her. She has to come back. I mean, for goodness sake, "he saw their footsteps, lining their future, in the snow"!
Nice,
