True, true....You should check out a book called "The Beast, the Eunich and the Glass Eyed Monster" by a gentleman named Ron Powers. While I admit I was not aware of some of the ulterior motives behind the "Letterbox" format, I must say that as a film fan I do appreciate it. Cinematographers, directors and set designers get paid big bucks to create images that in the best circumstances are nothing less than works of art. If you have ever seen a side by side comparison between the two ratios you mentioned you would be hard pressed to not be able to tell the difference. In the worst cases, you actually might miss key aspects of the story or plot line when films are re-formatted to fit full screen TV sets. Imagine -for lack of a more obscure offering- the Mona Lisa without arms! Not good, nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed your piece and most certainly agree with you about the station logos and laugh tracks. Additionally, I feel that at the very least, people should be able to choose the format they want (as is the case on some -but not enough- DVDs').
Thanks a s***load for the read!
