This is very good for only 298 words. Short stories with a set amount of words are really difficult to do as I've found out myself so I think you've done really well here.
You've managed to get across tension, thoughts and finally a twist that is needed.
Well done.

Wow, what a story. I liked it very much. One that keeps you wondering, guessing and in the end you're always wrong. Is this just a short story or are you going to develope it into a novel? If so, then I wish you all the best with it.

Hi, I really enjoyed this short story. I love stories where the good person really does get rewarded for what they do like our man here.
It just goes to show that even when we're down on our luck we can still be honest and as my parents always used to say, 'honesty pays'. It certainly did here.
I liked how the story unfolds and how through taking in the dog he not only finds work but in the end happiness as well.

I wish you all the best with this story.

Hi James,

Not too bad a beginning though I will admit to getting a little confused after ' he doesn't do it gently.' I had a job deciding just who was thinking what about whom, so I think this needs sorting. It's never easy to see one's own mistakes, I know.

On the whole I think this sounds like a good start to your novel and I wish you all the very best with it.

I love short stories like this, ones with a bit of fantasy in them.
Your piece had just the right amount of suspense and intrigue in it to make the reader want to keep on reading.
Only one piece that I could fault and that was the paragraph that began 'In a few months time' surely this would read better as 'A few months later' well that's what I feel anyway
