Summary of this DVD... | ||
16 year old Clareece "Precious" Jones is a troubled teen growing up in a impoverished area of Harlem, New York in the 1980's. On the surface, she is an overweight and illiterate young girl who is pregnant with her second child and consequently excluded from school but as the story unfolds, we learn that her children are the result of sexual abuse by her estranged father and that her Mother, who seems to have serious, unaddressed mental health issues, also physically and mentally abuses her daughter. It is only when she is taken in to an Alternative school for troubled teens that she begins to make friends and come across adults who care for her welfare, in particular her teacher Miss Rain, who teaches her to read and write and a welfare officer who helps her to stand up against her abusive Mother and claim back her life.
This type of DVD is good for...
People who like gritty dramas.
I especially liked... | ||
The standard of the acting was very good and the plot was interesting and engaging.
I didn't like... | ||
The fact that he main character "Precious" spoke in quite a thick accent and in some places I did struggle to understand what she was saying. I wasn't too keen on the ending which to me seemed to leave the story hanging and not reach a proper conclusion.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...

This DVD made me feel...
Quite sad - It's quite a depressing film really!
I recommend this DVD because...
It is a very powerful and interesting - if controversial story and makes you think, unlike many modern day popular movies.
I don't recommend this DVD because...
It isn't for the feint of heart and portrays child abuse and incest in a very matter of fact and open - although not extremely graphic - way. This is not a "feel good" movie and the ending does not give a sense of everything being resolved or happy for Precious, in fact it leaves the interpretation quite open to the watcher.
