I recommend this Book because...
There was so much to love about this book, and it was the action and adventure aspect, along with a certain non-human side character that I loved the most. Despite the fact that the book starts with Attiker being arrested and then the discovery that Raz and Attiker are fated mates (which I don't consider a spoiler because the blurb makes that obvious), I felt like the book started off slowly. It took me a little while to warm up to Raz and Attiker and to care about what happened to them. There was plenty of action and momentum to keep me turning the page though. It felt like the book would be predictable, but then the author kept taking the story on unexpected paths, which certainly helped to keep interest levels high. There were a number of key moments in the plot where a reader would think 'Obviously such-and-such is going to happen next' but it doesn't and as a reader you're left thinking 'How are they going to resolve this?' That aspect of not knowing what was ahead contributed greatly to the enjoyment of the book. By the time Attiker met Eldara in chapter 22 (about two thirds into the book), I was already won over, but from then I was fully immersed. I couldn't put the book down. I was emotionally connected not only to the two main characters, but also to a number of the side characters. The two young characters that Attiker meets in chapter 29 were delightful. I love how the author made so many of the side characters multi-dimensional. Ash was another side character I enjoyed. There was a great quote about him, from Attiker: "More importantly, he plays both sides of the fence." "He what?" Attiker grinned. "He knows how to get information in a brothel and what fork to use at a posh dinner." It's hard not to write spoilers for this book, but really important because the plot twists that take you down unexpected routes contribute a lot to the enjoyment of the book. I want to list all these little moments I loved from the book, but can't do so in a way that wouldn't give away important details. For example, one was when Ash's accent slipped during a moment of high stress. That's about the only one I can share without it being a spoiler! Despite now knowing everything that lies ahead for the characters, I can see this being a book I will re-read. I already want to re-read the part where Attiker meets Eldara! I'll definitely be checking out the next book in this new series when it is released.
