Rona saves the day in this final chapter of our story, but it is certainly not the end. |
GUARDIANS OF THE DEEP – Part V Since she had to meet with the mini sub boat at 3:00 in the morning, Rona made sure she went to bed early the night before. She wanted to be well rested and alert for this mission in the Pacific. She suddenly realized that Sarno didn’t inform her who was going with her. “Now that is strange” she said out loud. "I wonder who has been assigned to accompany me!” After donning the plastic suit, a technician went over the powers of the outfit once more. He waited for a nod of comprehension from Rona after explaining each feature of the suit. Then she stepped into the sub boat. She was about to ease herself into the driver’s seat, when a familiar voice boomed out from behind. "I don’t think you will be comfortable in the driver’s seat with that outfit on. Anyway, I’m elected to drive this boat.” Very surprised, Rona cried out almost jubilantly, “John… Agent John Travers! How are you? I never expected to see you here." Rona moved into the passenger seat, and was surprised at the ease of her maneuver. “The suit really is soft and pliable” she remarked in admiration. “And you look beautiful wearing it” was John’s response. His eyes took in the beauty of the suit and the woman wearing it. They exchanged amiable greetings and then they were on their way. The boat jutted forward into a room that filled up with water. Then the floating sub eased through a portal door and into the deep blue sea. They scouted around at the lower level of the ocean. The seriousness of the mission couldn’t dampen their delight in watching the creatures of the sea. Passing schools of fish stopped in unison in front of the moving boat, and scattered instantly as if giving right of way to traffic. Just briefly, a large turtle traveled alongside them, but they weren't certain if the turtle lagged behind or the sub gracefully raced ahead. They knew exactly where they were going. According to their calculations, the M-rots' base was just up ahead. They stopped the sub behind a coral covered rock, and then continued on using underwater skiers on cruise speed. They treaded carefully in the water. Sooner or later, they would have an encounter with the security at that base. But when they reached the exact spot where the base should be, there was nothing but a mountainous wall. Carefully, they glided up the wall and around it. It was just as wide as it was tall. “What in damnation is this?” was John’s crude scrutiny of the scene before them. Rona nodded in agreement, but added, “This must be a camouflage. There’s got to be something inside this wall.” All of a sudden, a section of the wall opened up and they found themselves battling the security guards. John motioned for Rona to work her way inside the base while he skillfully rendered the signals on their gamma ray guns powerless. It seemed John came prepared with a device made just for that purpose. Rona did what she does best with karate blows to any of the guards who got in her way. They didn’t know what hit them. She was soon near the open portal. Before she entered, she pressed three times on an area at her waist, and she became invisible. As Rona looked down at herself, she exclaimed, “Amazing! It works.” She knew every nook and cranny that hid the controls of this wonderful suit. She also knew exactly where to look for the small missile that was the main objective of this mission. She entered the halls of the base easily. She made no noise as she entered the main laboratory. Two M-rots were sitting at their workstations and they were monitoring the screens that televised the activities in the rooms and halls of the base. She softly passed the workers and headed for a large black safe in the corner. Rona knew she had to work swiftly. She quietly melted the lock and opened the safe. She knew no one would suspect the safe to open up unless some one was touching it. She carefully extorted the small missile and placed it into a long pocket of her plastic suit. A swift maneuver with her fingers and the missile was hidden from view. Rona made her way out of the base, but not before providing a diversion of sorts. She planted tiny pellet bombs under counters and in the corners of the halls as she made her way out. All the while she was singing to herself, 'What a wonderful suit I’m wearing. What a wonderful day, and I owe it all to you.' She patted the suit and became visible again. Then she uncovered one of the jet skiers and went looking for John. Suddenly, she was surrounded again by M-rots. There were three of them. She made quick work of two, but one stabbed her in the back with an electric blue, saw-toothed, small saber. As soon as the sword was pulled away from her back, the suit instantly mended itself. With no regard to her injury, she wrestled with her opponent and snapped his neck. She dove for the skier, which was still slowly sinking in the murky water. That was the last thing that she remembered. At the same time, John got back to the sub that was hidden behind the rock. He expected to find Rona waiting for him there. Hoping that he was there first, he studied his watch and he knew something was wrong. Rona was supposed to make her way back to the sub no later than 6 o’clock this morning. That time was now, and he sensed something was definitely amiss. He back-tracked toward the M-rots’ base again searching for Rona, but she was nowhere in sight. Since his main consideration at the moment was to find Rona, he hid behind anything that would obscure his view from the enemy. Then John decided to lower the sub further down into the ocean. That’s when he spotted her form about 50 feet down from where he was cruising. She was prone on a slab that was part of old wreckage buried in its watery grave for many centuries. From that distance, the suit was not visible. For a moment, he was lost in the reverie. All he could see was a beautiful woman in a bikini. She was sleeping face up as if she was just sun bathing at the beach. John shook off his pleasant thoughts, and stopped the sub a safe distance from her. He didn’t want to disturb the surroundings. He approached her carefully. He noticed that there were no marks on the front of her body, so he turned her over onto her stomach, and that’s when he noticed that the suit’s material had adhered to a section of her back. 'She's been wounded, and the suit stopped the bleeding. She could have bled to death had it not been for that suit. Marvelous!' he reasoned. John carried her to the sub and he headed back to the home base. He radioed ahead that Rona was injured and unconscious and to have medical staff on stand by as soon as they arrived there. Rona woke up in the base’s medical infirmary. She noticed that Tech Specialist Sarno was in the room talking to another man in white. “Everyone in this place wears white,” she said aloud as she attempted to sit up in bed. “No, no, Missy! You just lay back. You’re in no position to walk around yet. Your wounds were deep, but fortunately no damage was done to any organs. You’ll soon be fine.” Then Sarno introduced her to the doctor who worked on her. Rona extended her hand in thanks. The doctor then left the room. The next words out of her mouth were, “How did I get here? Is Agent Travis all right? I tried to get back to the sub, but I must have blacked out. I did get the missile and placed it in my miracle suit” “You can say that again.” It was John’s voice she heard as he entered the room. Rona was then filled in with the details of her rescue from the deep. Rona recovered splendidly from her ordeal. The missile was carefully dismantled and rendered irreparable. They did this confidently with the knowledge that it was one of a kind. The informer that was planted into the M-rots’ base was able to get the blueprints, and had them destroyed. So it was a successful undertaking all around. Both John and Rona headed back to their branch headquarters. Once there, Ned greeted them. “It’s about time you guys got back from your vacation.” “Did you miss us?” John and Rona responded in unison. “Sure, like a ton of bricks falling on my head,” Ned joked. Together, they walked down the corridor to complete another day’s work, All had the same thoughts running through their heads, 'I can’t wait for the next assignment!' |
