a homeless story
WHACK!

When Covid first broke out I was stayin’ at a day and night shelter for the homeless in Fort Collins, Colorado - the Aztlan Community Center. There were a few simple rules to follow: one included the 5:30AM wake up time; get the sheet and blanket off the mattress and stuff’em in the bag, grab your stuff, and move to the other side of the room (it was a gymnasium).

Now, some of these guys were severely depressed and slept some 14 hours a day. Well, there was one morning, some guy didn’t want to get up; and he had brought a thick stick in there with’im. 4 of the security guards were there. I was sitting at my table doing some artwork I think, when I heard it … “WHACK!”. He took a swing at one of’em. They picked’im up - legs, torso and all - and headed for the door, and he cried out, “oh my god what are you doing!” I don’t know what happened to’im after that. It wasn’t my business.
