Stories from the Emergency Room
Nurse Emma stood before a young woman whose face twisted with despair. Emma tried to be as sympathetic as possible, consoling the young woman, who said that her husband conspired with the police to take away her children and her money. It seemed delirious, at first, seeing as she has had a history of being hysterical and that her mother had a psychotic disorder, who's to say she doesn't have one, too? But, as she told the story to Emma, everything suddenly seemed real. As a child of 13 years, the young woman moved out of her house with her baby brother to her best friend's house because her mother had been too unwell to care for them. Her best friend, Jacky, lived with her parents, Maria and Josh. The young woman, Sophia, had been caring for her little brother, feeding him, doing the groceries, and all of that at a young age. And when 45-year-old Josh started eyeing her and showing her affection, she fell in love. A few years passed and she had twins of 6 years and a boy of 3 years with Josh. She had moved out of Maria and Jacky's house wth Josh who had bought them both a house. When shit hit the fan, Josh cheated on her and planned to take all of her children to Mexico. Josh kicked her and beat her as they fought over the birth certificates. She called the police but, of course, they didn't believe her and put her on hold in the Hospital.

"And you know what's worse??" Young 24-year-old Sophia cried to Emma, "They took my children, I don't know where they are! And you know what's worse?? They also handed my 13,000 dollars I got from my father and gave it to HIM!! They take my children and my money!"

Emma's eyebrows scrunched together. What a fucking messed up guy she thought inwardly as she took the woman's hand and nodded. Because of work ethics, Emma can't exactly just say, "What stupid fucking idiotic police, how stupid, what the fuck was that?" Her vocabulary shrank to zero as her blood rushed to her head. I hope his balls fall off she prayed in her mind as she consoled the woman with a gentle voice.

As Sophia was still talking, another patient on a nearby bed gasped for air.

"I can't breathe! I can't breathe!"

The woman on the bed was obese. She clutched her chest with one hand and, with another, grasped her mother's hand. Emma excused herself from Sophia and told the new trainee to call the doctor and ask for medicine for vomiting and nausea. The trainee came back with the doctor and Emma breathed a sigh of relief and went back to talking with Sophia. As the hustle and bustle went on, the whole hospital paused as a loud THUD! was heard followed by a very subtle "ssssssssss splash splash" sound. Emma turned around to see the doctor and the trainee trying to lift the oversized woman, who fell face-first, off the floor. Emma immediately rushed to help to flip the woman on her face. Meanwhile, another nurse was asking the mother questions like, what's her nationality, her age, her name?

"She's- We're Indian. She's uhm 34, no, 35 years old, this year- What's, what's happening?" The mother fiddled and looked over the nurse's shoulder to see her daughter.

Emma and the others heaved the woman, whose name was Ananya, so she could properly lay on her back and they revealed what very much seemed like pee. Emma winced. They brought in a sheet and tried to get it under the woman and they heaved her back on the bed. The big nurses counted, "Fuck, Shit, Pee," and heaved her on the bed. Someone shouted, "There's a pulse!" As Ananya gasped for air every 3 seconds.

"Fuck you mean there's a pulse?? That's the last straw! She's gasping, then she's dead!" Emma thought but instead, she said, "Get the defibrillator!"

"Wait, did she die?" One of Emma's daughters interrupted the story.

"Unfortunately, we lost her, she passed."

"What?!?! NOO!! WHY??" Another one of her daughters said.

The first one who spoke just went silent.

"Anyway," Emma continued, "That's every other day for us in the Emergency Room... But that doesn't mean we're immune to it..."

---End Chapter One---

---------------

Based on a true story that happened literally last night. "Emma" is on night shift. If you're wondering what happened to Sophia, they're still investigating her and she got off hold this morning. The hospital called the police and said that she was put on hold inappropriately. But the dispatcher said that they were not there and the deputy who put her on hold was not there, they do not know what happened and they are currently investigating. Ain't that fucking stupid? While you're investigating, her children are gone now. Thanks, justice system. By the way, I only heard about this story this morning from one of my relatives when they came back from work. I won't say who, though, cause, like...
