like most of the boysin the parish but i wouldnt graduate fr three more years and the war was expected to last six months so imagine my surprise when i saw on the kiosk that we were all calledto active military teachers included and were required to be assembled on he oparADE GROUNDS AT ZERO SIX HUNDRED MONDAY MORNING AND THATH SHRIFF WOULD BE SENT AFTER ANY STRAgglersso i hurried home not because i was anxiuos to go but because i needed to stop by the pond and wade for just a bitbecause my boots were causing my feeto get sore and i wanted to soak hem i lefthem full of waterto soak over night on the back porch on the way to house i saw emma the nirghbors daughtershe was all ofivfoot woblonde hair bliueyes a gorgeuousbeyond believeshe ws as they say stacked like card sharks dckshe was so startd to undo my pants it was nothat i minded it was just nothe right way shedeservedthe respect of a lady and i would give ito her even if it meanthat we would never laywith ou hearts amostoucingii was temtedthugh becausethe thought crossedmy mind what if i dont make it back beside she was a womanow in every way buthatbutt modty as it isomething that only happens once i wantd ito be dream perfect fo r herwebhad talked aboout it i had even tied her up a couple of timesand shenjyedthat but i felthat was no righ either and besides it felt like more a test of trusthan a surrender to loveon monday the whole class was there excepy john philips wich was a surprise because the bets were on grahm porter but i had figured he would go justo get away from his old man especially on a monday wher his dad would have been drunk and nasty all weekendi had my mess wrappedin my bedroll uniform on and squared away with my bootsopping wethe es was boiling pot a fry pan pie tinthe boiling pot could be made into a crude oven using the pie tin tas bottom if you piut three small stones under it so it would not burn every hingwhile you baked turnedthe corner in time to hear one of the boys askig wherthtransport was to wich the captain repled you are infantry arent yowe hithe road atzeroseven hundreddropping off any mail that neededto with captain who assured us he would handeliver each and every one f themon the first night we stopped anf had to hunt for palatble watter sinc there werempty acanteens aong usthis was tim e consuming as none of us were familiar withhis areaon the seconday i spotted small whte blosoms o some bushes in he woods wewere passing by and knew that athis time of year that means blackberriesso i asked the captain to stop there for the night as black beries are very good ando not require hnting sincwe already knowherehey arejust a little care when forageing themwithe idea that rabbits also like to be in the briars as mostpredators would not follow them intothe briarsi started filling my boiling pot with berrie and notcedtat a bit farther in there were rapberiesand since we had been tld terewere no yankees aroundbtrue tto the way my luck was going as i was pocking raspberries and looked overthe top of the briars to see in thre were any path ways in to pick mre i happen to notice a yankee spreading his messto be honesthemain reso i noticed him was from the smell of the coffee he was brewingnow i had a problem how do i get away from the yan without getting shot i could justake off running buthats a bit dicey or just walk away but i didnt know if i could trust a yankee to no shoot me in the backafer all we had thughthere wouldnt bee a war because iwas a rehash of what we had lready determned in threvolutionary war sayig parts of the whole do have the righto leave and form thier own governmentbuthe yankee hypocray went far enough to not onlt disagree buto play the part of king goerge in he conflictso thinking you couldepend on yankeloggic or hono seemed a foolish endeavoi could remember seeing an oak on rhe way in and had noticed squirrel in itgetting ready for winterathe oak tree i sit down keeping the tree between me and the yankeebu still the squirrells werunning all ovrthe place suffing hier louder fr winterand after just a few minutes i figure outhat what was haooening was that evwry time they wouldrop an acorn out of the tree a chipmunk would run out ansteal itso they goto where when they dropped one they to would rush to where it fell until th chipmiunk missed his timming and the squirrels caught and killed himstill wanting some meat for supper i though about atching a squirrel buthats not as easy as yu might thinksinc thier path is unpredictableand it is almost impossible to set a good trip snar in a treeso looking around for something that would help i spotted a branch thahad broken off in a storm i lookedlike so i dragged it over and leaned iup on the side of the treekingoergein the conflictso it seemed thatrying to predicthem was foole task and one that i mifhdo to an extennt but not enough to trust my life to itso it was that i had to set a pull snare on thtree itis theasiest on to set and the most difficulto use i mrely had ti open thesnare and set wher are going an squireels mosrt animals r lazt, that would be the wrong wordbecause of the way people interprett it they like most animals will conservenergy when they can because it written i thier dnpluss in the wild it becomes obvious tha many die from just running out of energy so they cant get awaythat being said thebrach is an enwrdy saving on ramp to the tree and they would use it and that madethe tp of itheso i sethe snare and began my watch wich does take serious concentrationat last i saw onre in a good position to try it and i pulled fast and hardcatching the squirrel around the neck and s it rolled around trying to get freei noticedthat i had alsocaughtis front legs pulling them up to his chin greatly affectinghis abilitiesi deciided t put him in my rifle scabbard to keep for awhile as put him in i put a couple more wraps arouf his bneck to be sure it just loosen up withis fighting it was then thatye scabbaerd is a made of raw hide and a sock in shpe so that yu can lide your rifle it fto protect itinmy vase it was real raw hidee as i had not even sodtned ot so it hard like a plastic caseit was as i ws putting him in that i heard what yu gotherereb shoot i had forgottn a bout him no not forgotten just shifted my atentionsand as my luck goes he came up on me while i ws distractedso now i had a real prble if you consider havig an enemy behind you with a loaded rufle while you have a hand full of squirrel and scabbarda poblemi raisethe scabbard ansshaking it hard enough for him to hear
