IN The Hidden World, the Light Fury rips Hiccup off of Toothless, and is happy and proud. In HTTYD 2, Valka does the same. Both think they are freeing Toothless.

Later in The Hidden World, the Light Fury saves Hiccup, and gives him the same look Toothless gives Astrid when he saves her.

Hiccup is riding Toothless and singing. He doesn’t notice, but begins drumming on Toothless.

In HTTYD, the Book of Dragons shows a Timberjack slicing through full-grown trees. The Red Death does the same with crushing sea stacks.


When Hiccup is first learning to cook, he has questions the kitchen book doesn’t answer. What is the best direction to use to peel turnips? Do apples have to be cut horizontally? Can you drink water used for boiling? Stoick is slowly losing his mind. Hiccup begins experimenting to answer these questions. Does he write the answers down? Does he tell anyone, like his aunt Blister or Gothi? Does Gerda Thorston learn these things?


“Did you see Hiccup’s face when we were talkin* to him?” Ruffnut screwed up her face, thinking. “He looked weird, like he was upset about something.”

“Wait, you noticed that, ‘cuz I didn’t, Tuffnut said. I was trying to figure out the best scale scrub to use on Terrible Terrors.”

“He had that look he used to get back then. Before Toothless. The ‘Oh, this is going to be bad’ look.’”

“You mean from when we used to hate him? Yeah, he used that face a lot, not that it reall6 helped him. We don’t pick on him anymore, but we hav3 Barf and Belch, so we’ve kind of traded up.”

“But we don5 pick on him like we used to. Snotlout still does, but nobody hurts him any longer.”

Ruffnut remembered them harassing Hiccup, tossing taunts and sometimes violence at him. They had stopped doing that tha5 day in the Kill Ring. It wasn’t just picking on him, though; he had been resigned to what would happen, to having no way out.

“So, if we’re not being mean t9 Hiccup, what’s got him upset?”

“I dunno, sis. Why do you care?”

“Because…look, Tuff, we treated him like dung on our boots. We harassed him all the time. I wishing I hadn’t, because we were lousy to him. He didn’t deserve it.”

“Yeah, I feel bad abou5 that.”

“So, Hiccup still doesn’t deserve it, and I don’t want to see it happen again. We,” Ruffnut gestured between the two of them, “need to find out what’s going on, so we can look out fo4 Hiccup.” She yanked her brother to his feet. “Let’s find Astrid.”


King Ahab wants to believe the 400 prophets telling him he will have victory. If they all think it’s true, then it must be. Micaiah says the opposite, and King Ahab not only refuses to believe him, but throws him in jail on limited rations. Ahab considers the prophet a troublemaker when he speaks and acts against what Ahab wants to believe. Micaiah puts his trust in the false prophets and pays the price for it, dying after being struck by an arrow.

Stoick wants to think Hiccup is a problem, and only forcing him into the Viking mold will work. Hiccup’s size and creativity and thinking outside the box are liabilities. As thinks Stoick, so thinks the tribe. Hiccup is the lone voice for something different, and when he befriends Toothless, he is opposing everything his tribe stands for. Taming the Nightmare and trying to protect Toothless puts Hiccup directly in Stoick’s crosshairs. Stoick refuses to listen, shoves his son, his only child, to the floor. He then disowns Hiccup.

Stoick trusts in his own abilities, and that leads to attacking the Red Death. Stoick realizes the beast can’t be killed by sheer Viking stubbornness, and says, “I was a fool.” He nearly dies, but is saved by Hiccup, and the other teens. Hiccup saves his tribe, but loses his leg, a consequence of his father’s actions. Unlike Ahab, Stoick saw the truth and was able to change. Hiccup would never get his leg back, or regain the years he never listened or approved of Hiccup, but he could move forward a changed man.

After losing Valka, some women in the tribe try to get Stoick interested in him. Phlegma considers it, but is shut down by Gobber. She decides to observe, and protects her Chief by sabotaging the efforts to snag Stoick when possible.

Valka is torn. She and Stoick are back on Berk, and after some time passes, Stoick and Cloudjumper are resenting the time each one spends with the other. Valka tries to please both, vacillating, but never puts her foot down. She sets no boundaries, and it all continues until Cloudjumper leaves. He remains on Berk, but avoids the village, and Valka is devastated by his absence. Stoick has Valka, but she has changed into someone hurt and stricken. Stoick sees how badly she misses Cloudjumper. He packs some things, and moves to the forest, then seeks out Cloudjumper. Stoick insists Cloudjumper return to Valka. Stoick will live outside his house, and the dragon can have Valka to himself.

Cloudjumper returns, and Valka comes to realize Stoick won’t come back. He will come to the house for needed items, like his formal clothing, but will make his home away from Haddock house.

Valka, once again, is heartbroken. Toothless communicates with Valka’s dragon, and prevents Valka from searching for Stoick. She turns to Gobber, who tells her they love her, and want her to be happy. What has she done to rectify this? Nothing. It’s sad she can’t love them back. She protests, saying she loves them both. Gobber points out she let the problem build. Stoick and Cloudjumper are making huge sacrifices for her, and they’ll all be miserable unless she does something to clean up the mess she’s made.

Gronckles are bulky, thick skinned creatures. Fishlegs is similarly bulky. But he does not take insults well. He is, and insists Meatlug is a sensitive soul.

Hiccup can be reckless and dangerously distracted, but he has survived many dangers. This is because he creates disasters no one knows about. Hiccup is away from town testing an invention. It makes a loud noise, scaring the nearby sheep. They escape their pen and run through a the village. Hiccup isn’t there, and doesn’t get blamed or hurt.
