If wishes were horses, there’d be
many horses, all right, a grand
amount; stallions, mares, colts,
mane flowing, a galloping
thundering throng, an
overflow of horse power
abiding on this Earth.
Perhaps not as many as
snowflakes,
yet an ocean of horse, a Sahara
of horse, a reign of equine
because wishes
are a dime a baker’s dozen
and everybody makes wishes.
Horses would get more than
a mention in the news, I think,
(many horses extant),
these powerful creatures
be they the Mr. Ed variety
or the Secretariat thoroughbred
kind, or even an old paint.
Perhaps we would be
content, shoulder to snout
bumping into hind quarters
and beset with neighs
all day long.
We would not ride
if wishes ruled our common
world; no, our stewardship
would be to the horse,
and saddle shops would
surely thrive. And what
of hunger? Would there be
enough hay to feed them all?
