A poem about the hypocrisy in issues of women's sexuality.
When we are young
full of curiosity and hormones
and come to them with questions
instead of teaching safety
they teach us to be ashamed
they preach us self control

In school and churches
to us they teach
just keep your legs closed darlin'

And when we're older
fully charged with our own lives
and seek out birth control
that will not break the bank
they mock us
and attempt to deny us our sexuality

The conservatives advocates
in their speech
just keep your legs closed darlin'

And when that method fails
they give us only shame
look down on us and
call us sluts
condemn our past choices
while attempting to deny us our future ones

Those who shame us
to us they screech
should have kept your legs closed, darlin'

And if the baby we decide to keep
they offer us no sympathy in our struggle
and if we reach out for help
they call us moochers
drive us down and treat us
no better than the dirt they walk on

They who call themselves “prolife”
say, when for help we reach
should have kept your legs closed, darlin'

Their system was built
to keep us down
to force us into subservience
and punish us for our sexuality
they offer injustice
and attempt to silence us

When we speak out
to us they preach
just keep your mouth shut, darlin'
