Peace on Earth

I hear carols echoing,
they sing of peace on earth,
they elicit visions
of planetary unity
and of humanity
as the branches of one tree.

I hear gunshots echoing,
the distant thunder of fighter jets
and bombs reverberating;
almost drowning out
the songs of unity and peace,
but I know
the noises of war
are the birth pangs
of a new age.

Peace is promised
in all the sacred scriptures;
I can hear its song rising
out of the Earth itself
and I can hear angelic voices proclaiming
the Prince of Peace has come.
