A Flash romance |
I love Lucy. Jim also loves Lucy. I know I am a fool to think I stand a chance against a guy like Jim. Jim is athletic, good looking, rich--everything a woman could want. Everything I am not. Lucy loves dragonflies. Yesterday Jim gave her a dragonfly brooch. It was made of gold and crusted in diamonds. I know that if I am ever to have a chance with her, I have to do better. I take extra special care in my small backyard today. I place small pools of water in strategic spots all around the yard. I go to Lucy's house. "Come and have tea with me." I say "We will sit on the back porch and watch the sunset." I am delighted when she agrees. When we arrive at my house I tell her I have a surprise. I ask her to close her eyes and I lead her out to the back porch. I let her stand there for a moment as I survey my handiwork. "Open your eyes Sweetheart." I say softly She opens her eyes and gasps, "Oh, Gary how...?" In the backyard hundreds of beautiful dragonflies perform their aerial ballet for Lucy. I take her hand in mine. "I can't give you diamonds" I tell her "but I promise I will do everything in my power to make you happy." Lucy has not yet agreed to marry me. But I hold onto the hope that she will. I watch the dragonflies dance around my backyard. I hope they have danced their way into Lucy's heart. The phone rings, breaking my reverie. Its Lucy's voice on the other end. "Yes." And the courtship of the dragonflies is complete. |
