A personal pilgrimage to Symi |
Symi The Forgotten Island I am writing this little book after being encouraged by Alan, my husband, to share my story after having the opportunity to realize my dream.Such a special & precious experience, one I will treasure forever. My great love for the Island of Symi began with my earliest childhood memories of my Mothers stories of ths little island where my Grandmother was born & had spent her early life before marrying & moving such a distance to a strange country so far away. It had been my dream one day seeing where my Grandmother had spent her early life & here I was travelling on a ferry,on a beautiful clear day to the Island of Symi. As the ferry drew close I felt a great lump in ny throat & a great surge of excitement consumed my whole body..In my mind I had a picture of what Symi would be like & my imagination ran free. Symi is a small Island off the coast of Turkey, perhaps one of the most remote, intimate & picturesque of the Peleponese group of islands. Many books have been written on the Islands of Greece & tourism has made them very popular holiday destinations, but mine was a personal pilgrimage to Symi.. Upon my return home to Australia in April 1992, I was inspired to write about my experience & the deep affection I have for Greece & it's people, whose warmth, generosity & hospitality were overwhelming. Arriving in Athens,I travelled to the Islands of of Mykinos, Santorini, Crete & Rhodes. All the islands have their own charm, history & mythology unique to each one. |
