She felt like a bug
Pined upon a great board
And trapped beneath a pane of bright glass
They admired her pretty colours
Though her face left much to be desired.
They liked to take her out to look at.
They would sit and pat her shell
And wonder at how something so small
So ugly
Could have such a lovely body.
They talked about her
Like she couldn’t hear
Like she wasn’t there.
And the thin piece of metal that held her in place
Kept her where they wanted her
Had long ago become part of who she thought she was.
As if when it was removed her soul would slip away.
She lay pinned in place,
And dreaded the day they would replace her,
With one of the flashy butterflies that lay either side of her.
Though she hated her cage,
She did not want another to take it.
How pathetic she must be,
To cling so to something that held her captive.
