The Grey Mountain

She sat and watched the sun slowly raise and watched as the men below readied for battle.It had been three long years since she has seen her father and brothers .Katie got and started down the mountain and walked by the camp and wonder if the war would ever end. These blasted Yankees were all over her father's farm and there was nothing she could do about it.Then as she turned around he appeared out of no where. He was tall and looked like he had not had anything to eat in weeks.Katie ( brown eyes) Carter walked right by him as if he was not there,her stomach was turning over and over wondering what he would say or do.He just stood there and did nothing as she got farther away she turned to see him as he fell to the ground.Katie just stood there what should she do ,the right thing would be to go back and help him and she knew her pa would have wanted her to do that.
But this war in war time and before he left pa had told her to be careful watch out for strangers coming by especially Yankees.But the bible say "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you ",so in her heart Katie knew she would go and help him.After two days of sleep he finally woke up and looked around where in the world was he .He got up and look out the window and saw Katie coming back from the barn and opened the door for her.She looked up surprised and glad he was finally awake. Katie did not say anything and went straight to fixing breakfast and he sat there just watching.He finally say my name is John Conner's and I am from Maine.Thank you for helping me.Katie just looked up and said "Welcome ,but my pa said to help those in need."There was a knock at the door it was Jeb the neighbor down the road Katie opened the door and said hi , Jeb"s eyes went right to John Conner's and he asked "Who he was." Katie told him "How he was sick and she had helped him out and he would be leaving soon".Jeb said Okay, brown eyes talk to you soon and he left." After he had left John turned to Katie and asked "Why did he call you brown eyes? "It is kind of a nickname my pa gave me as a child . he always said I had the brownest eyes he had ever seen so everyone started calling me brown eyes."Then John saidT thanks for all you have done for me and I will be leaving in the morning got to get back to camp." Early the next day Katie watched John ride off and wondered if this was the last time they would see each other or would the war have their paths cross again.
