John has a fear of dying while he is fighting for his home planet |
My name is John and I am a soldier for a special ops team known as Noble 6. It is the year of 2552 on the planet of Reach. I joined the team a few months back and back then there were six of us. Now, there are only three of us. The other three died while trying to protect our planet of Reach from the alien force known as the Covenant. Currently we are at our homemade camp waiting for our next orders from command so we can continue our mission. I am currently trying to open a can of beans while Carter, our commander, is waiting to receive orders from command and our other teammate William is his tent sleeping. Carter is a tiger, fighting for a cause and doesn’t give up. William is like a snake. He sneaks up behind the enemies and takes them out silently when needed to. “You talk to command yet?” I asked. “No, they said they would give us orders fifteen minutes ago, but they still didn’t call,” Carter said. He is sitting playing around with his radio while William comes out of his tent looking very tired like he just woke up from his sleep. “Where are our weapons?” said William while he was looking in the campsite. “Check in my tent, I remember putting them there after we made the site,” Carter said. “Alright, I will have a look,” William said “Guys, check this out!” Carter and I rush over to his tent to see what William was yelling about and I notice our supply box was empty and that’s where all of our weapons were kept. I notice plasma burns on the lock while observing the box. “Grunts were here and stole our weapons!” I said “No really, I thought a magical fairy came and took them,” William said while laughing. I punched William in his shoulder lightly and Carter snapped at us. “This is serious, we have no weapons and if we are attacked we are all dead like the rest of Noble 6,” Carter yelled. “I say we just wait till the morning and ask command for a supply drop,” I said. “I suppose your right,” Carter said, “I’ll stay up and watch for any intruders.” “Alright sounds good.” William and I walk to our tents and get in our makeshift beds. I sit there lying in bed worrying about our commands for the mission we have been on for three months. These three months have been suicide for me. We had to fight countless Covenant troops and we lost three men doing so. One of our partners, Jack, was blown up by a Covenant carrier when it exploded and the other, George was shot in the back in the head. No one really knows what happened to Jason, the sniper of our team. Last time I saw him, he was sent off to protect a group of people from the Covenant. “These missions have been brutal and we got to continue in the morning. I just want to make it home alive and see my parents and see that the team doesn’t lose their lives as well. I might just go see if I could go home in the morning, but I don’t know if that would be a smart idea. I am just going to go to sleep and see what happens.” I wake up to a ringing of a bell and look to see Carter ringing a cow bell in my face. “I’m up, I’m up!” I yell so he would stop ringing his bell. “There is no sleeping in allowed in the camp,” Carter said, “We have to start moving in a bit, command sent out a chopper with supplies and they should be here shortly.” Out of nowhere, a helicopter appeared and dropped a supply drop onto our location. It contained an assault rifle, a sniper rifle, a shotgun, grenades, combat knifes, and some medicine kits. I took the assault rifle and shot one bullet at a tree nearby. Ii ripped the tree and split it into two pieces. “Now that’s more like it!” I said. William took the shotgun and blasted a tree into tiny pieces. “My weapon is better than yours!” William said while laughing. “Knock it off,” Carter said, “You two are acting like two year olds.” While they were talking, the helicopter also dropped a Warthog to aid in their travels. A Warthog is a jeep with a weapon turret attached to the back. “Now let’s talk about the mission,” Carter said, “We must take the package we received from the doctor and take it to the President of the UNSC. He is located at the end of the Mojave Plains near his frigate called the Pillar of Autumn. Then we must protect the ship as it taking off because there will be a lot of enemies to take care of.” “When do we start?” I asked. “We are starting right now.” Carter said. He jumped into the driver seat of the Warthog and William jumped into the gunner seat. I got into the passenger while trying to keep myself together from my worries. We started off to a good start, but as we entered farther into the plains, we realized we were surrounded. “I am going to call air support and hop in with them to provide cover,” Carter said, “You guys work to get closer to the frigate. John take the wheel!” Carter jumps out of the Warthog and I take the wheel. I am trying hard not to lose control of the car because of all of the explosions from the Covenant troops near us. “Watch out for that rocket!” William said. As he said it I notice a missile heading straight for us. I try to turn in evasion, but failed. “We got to jump! I said. “No really!” William said back as he was jumping. I jump from the Warthog as it exploded right behind me. I was flung right into a rock that was jabbing out of the earth and piercing pain was inside me. William comes to help me out while carrying medicine kits. “Let me patch you up,” he said to me while putting some type of medicine on the spot where the rock hit me. I was starting to feel a lot better now I see a canyon out in the distance. \ “Let’s go to that canyon in the distance and call it a day,” I said. “Alright, sounds good.” We start running to the canyon as fast as we can to avoid any type of Covenant troop to fight. Too bad that didn’t help at all. I am looking around the area around the canyon and I can see a squad of elite troops coming our way. They were armed with needle rifles and those things explode when enough of them are together. “Enemy squad is near us,” I tell William as he is reloading is gun. “Alright, let’s take them out.” We both run to cover near the squad and start firing our guns at them. They start firing back and a gun fight started. I shoot two clips into an elite and he collapses to the ground in agony. I put him out of his misery with a shot to the head. William is in a tangle with the other two elites. One of the elites got a hold of him while the other tries to hit him with his fists. I run in there with my combat knife and slit the throat of the elite holding William. Blue blood oozes out of him like a waterfall and hits the ground with a splat. William then takes his knife and stabs the other elite multiple times in the face. He was mince meat when he was done with him. Then I see a blue light in the distance and I see grunts holding plasma grenades. “Kamikaze grunts!” I scream. They run to us screaming in high pitch voices with grenades in their hands. I take my rifle and spray many bullets at them and they all fall down dead. Then, a giant explosion happens. The canyon is a couple yards in front of us. We run straight into the canyon and sit down on the ground. Then, I hear rocks crumbling outside. It sounds like it was coming from a giant robot. “Do you hear that?” I asked William. “Yeah, it’s probably nothing.” “I will go look to see what it is.” I walk outside the other end of the canyon and see a giant Scarab battle tank coming straight for us. I start to panic and run back in the canyon and hide behind some boulders. “We are all going to die!” I chant as I am hiding. “Why is that?” He walks outside and realizes what I am talking and hides too. Then I hear an engine and I see a pelican heading straight for the Scarab. My radio starts beeping indicating someone is trying to talk to me. I pick it up and listen to who it was talking and it was Carter. “It has been nice working with you guys,” Carter said sadly. Then he hung up and I see a giant explosion and the pelican and Scarab cease to exist. Carter sacrificed himself to blow up the Scarab. “He will be missed,” I said to William. “Yes, he will be missed very much, but we got to continue the mission,” He replied. He was right. We had to deliver the package still. We were about halfway there to the outpost and we have no transportation. I notice in the distance a jeep that was pretty badly damaged from the battle a bit away from our position. “Let’s take that jeep over there,” I said. He looks off into the distance and sees the jeep and nods his head in agreement. I start to walk, but I stared to have terrible thoughts. I couldn’t continue the mission because of my fears. I keep on having thoughts of not making it home alive. I just start walking to a random rock and sat on it. “Get up, we have to continue on,” William said. “Why, we are just going to die like Carter if we continue,” I said to him. He went up to me and grabbed me on the shoulder. “Look, this is life threatening, but if we don’t do this the planet will die out.” “I guess you’re right, but I’m not sure.” “You have to get over your fears! You are here to do the mission and help save this planet!” As he was yelling at me, I started to get his point. I needed to get over my fears and do what is important. “You’re right, let’s finish this.” I said. We head to the jeep and it worked fine. I started up perfectly and we were off. Off in the distance, I could see the Pillar of Autumn and the outpost. I also saw explosions in the outpost. “We are going to have a lot of company,” I said. “Yeah, it looks like it was overrun,” He said to me. We drive for several hours. We didn’t have any enemies to fight on the way to the outpost and as we neared the outpost, I noticed we were in trouble. The whole place was covered in dead marines and aliens. Other than that, bullets covered the walls and fire rained down from the skies onto the trees and plants. William and I looted the bodies for guns and ammo. I found a shotgun and William found a grenade launcher. We both liked what we found and went into the main area of the outpost. Covenant overflowed the place. Grunts, jackals, brutes, and elites stormed the place with the most advanced weaponry. “Alright, here is the plan,” William began to speak, “I am going to sneak behind the enemies and take control of the cannon.” He points to a giant gun up on the hill above the outpost. “You will fight your way to the frigate entrance and deliver the package.” “Alright, let’s do this.” We split up and take our separate ways for now. I take the path to the entrance of the frigate. It is loaded with all sorts of enemies. I go behind some broken down walls and start cleaning up. I shoot one shell and three grunts go flying into the wall. I pull the pin of a grenade and throw it. The enemies start running around in panic and then they explode into pieces and go everywhere. The path is clear and I move forward. As I am rushing forward, two elites jump in front of me. I pull out my knife and I throw it into the head of one and shoot the other one in the chest. They fall limp and I continue. I am about a couple of feet from the entrance of the frigate and a hunter comes around the corner. These things have heavy armor and bullets don’t affect them. Out of nowhere, a giant explosion blows the hunter into pieces. It looks like William got the cannon under control. Now I have to get the package to the president. I walk to the frigate door and someone comes out. “Are you John?” he asked. “Yes I am,” I said “You got the package?” “Yes. Are you the president?” “Indeed I am.” He said back. I hand him the package and he looks at it with awe. He looks at me with deep appreciation. “Thank you; you have done a great deed for man-kind.” He said. “All in a day’s work” “I need you to cover us while we take off.” “Alright, I can do that. Also, what are you going to use that for?” “That is classified information. I have to get going. I wish you and your partner best of luck.” “Thank you.” I step back and the door shuts. The frigates engines start to roar and it takes off like the speed of light. I then hear screaming near the cannon. I am scared out of my mind as I run up there. When I arrive, I see William fighting two elites and they have energy swords. He tries to fight one off, but the other one stabs him in the chest. I run in there and shot them in the heads. They fall off the hill in an awkward fashion. I run to William and try to help him out. “There is no need. I am done for. I did my mission, now you need to do yours. I need you to be as brave as ever.” After he said that, he goes limp in my hands. I am now alone. All of my friends that I have come to know have died fighting. I am going to keep my promise to William. I will be brave and carry out the mission. I need to keep calm and not to be afraid of anything, no matter what happens. I hop into the gunner seat of the cannon to finish what Noble 6 started. I shoot as many shots into the remaining carrier ships in the sky. Then the super carrier came into sight. This was one of the main sources of the Covenant. I shot all the remaining shots into it and it started to make a really high pitch beep. Then a huge explosion covered the sky. The mission was complete and the Pillar of Autumn was safe. I am the only survivor and Reach is destroyed. I thank William for helping me get this done, but there is one thing left I need to do. I walk back into the outpost and notice more carriers are coming from the destroyed super carrier. I breathed in and realized I was ready to conquer my fear. I take my shotgun into the fight. The enemies are dropping off from the ships and spot me. They all rush me and I rush at them. It was me on five elites. One of them dies from my shotgun blast and the rest knock me down. I try to fight upward, but it was no use. They knock my gun out of my hands and step on my wrist. I scream in agony. Then all light was diming as I see a sword go into my chest. I was pinned down in pain, dying, but knew one thing. I was dying a hero. I saved the Pillar of Autumn and lived up to my promise to William. I became a fearless warrior. I fought many enemies trying to protect my planet, but didn’t make it out in one piece. I am dying from trying rather than living and giving up. My vision fades to black and I am no more. |
