A Week with Morton

On Thursday, Morton was a foot shorter than he had been on Wednesday. Friday, he had two heads. "Great," he thought looking in the mirror, "Just in time for the weekend." Saturday and Sunday were uneventful. It was tough being so short, not able to reach things he had placed way at the back of the kitchen counter, and that would not have been so bad if the coffee wasn’t back there. So no coffee, and he didn't have any hats that matched, or even went together particularly well. He had to settle for a baseball cap with the logo from a local boiler service company on it for the left head (which he thought was the one he had started with, `his' head so to speak) and a navy blue beret for the other, a hat he had always secretly loved but never had the gumption to wear in public. He thought it was very racy and debonair, neither of which word he would have ever used to describe himself So the right head got to be racy and debonair, and the left pedestrian and local. He didn't care; after all when that right head was gone(would it ever be? Hard to know. . .) he could smirk to himself about it, and everyone else could sigh in relief, "Oh, we're so glad that other head is gone, he was so. . .pushy and sure of him self, don't you think?" Morton could nod and roll his eyes in disgust. Monday he had wings, Tuesday he gained back the foot he had lost on Thursday but he couldn't hear, Wednesday the entire city seemed completely unfamiliar to him, and he spent the day wandering aimlessly, hoping things would return to normal by nightfall (which they didn't, so he had to spend the night in a hotel that was full of giant lizards) and then Thursday rolled around again. He woke up in the hotel, in a giant-lizard sized bed, and found he was back to only one head, but it was the right one, the one wearing the beret. Morton sighed and went down to the street.

The city was back, and he hurried off to his office. He had an important meeting to attend. He would have made it, too, if he hadn't had to walk backwards ....
