This is a story of a young girl who has lost her memory.
“I was searching for shelter. I needed a place to rest. End of story.” It was the truth, just not all of the truth. I couldn’t mention about the search for the ring. The last words that came from my mother’s mouth were to not tell anyone about what her and my father had been doing. What they had been doing was against this law that they were into. I had no idea where these certain laws had come from, they just said that I had to follow them or danger our entire family. “I want to know why you are taking notes on me and my experiences. I am not any more special than the next person.” I say simply. I am also trying to avert their attention from the last question.
“Actually, Alex, you are special. I just can’t put my finger on it. It’s throwing me off because of how quickly you recovered from the Kepher poison.” He answered.
“I’m not some random species. I’m a human who has learned to increase her senses and use them wisely.” Matt and Nickolas glance at each other. Nickolas leans closer to me and sniffs. I jump away from him and get into a low crouch.
“She definitely has something unusual about her Old Man.”
“What is this? Some type of myth and legends club? I am tired of this nonsense.” I let out a mild laugh. A teenage girl burst through the door and slams me against the wall. Her whole hand could wrap around my scrawny neck.
“This is not a game. So don’t treat it like its some joke.” Her fingers tighten their grip on my throat. Nickolas grabs her waist and pulls her away from me. She’s lucky he did, otherwise she may have lost a couple fingers.
“Nick, let me go!” The girl continued to try to get out of Nickolas’s iron grip. You could easily tell that she’d never succeed from how much shorter she was than him. “Rileigh, knock this nonsense off. Alex doesn’t know any better because she’s new.” Matt must be the head of this club, because as soon as she heard his voice she stopped. Nickolas releases her and she stands as close to him as he would let her. She glared at me with her deep chocolate brown eyes. I don’t know what her deal was, and I didn’t plan on staying much longer to find out. “This is ridiculous. I do not want to spend another minute listening to people with troubled minds talk about something that does not even exist.”I love trying to act like I don’t know anything about the mythical creatures that roam the streets at night. It feels amazing when I realize just how gullible most people can be.
“Alex, you have seen how dangerous these creatures can be. Someone is also looking to find our body dead. You cannot leave until we know that you are safe from harm.”
“It must have been a figment of my imagination.”
“No it wasn’t—“
I didn’t hear the rest of the sentence because I ran out the door. I knew I was faster than most of them. They only did research by asking questions, not experiencing it for their selves. I reach the room that I had slept in and grab my duffel bag and leather jacket. I had just enough time to get out of the room before they blocked my only exit. I run down the stairs and out the door. I continue to run until I reached the end of the street. I look behind me and sure enough, they weren’t following me. I knew they couldn’t keep up with me! I slowed myself down to a steady jog. I looked at my surroundings for the first time since running away from Nickolas and his group of friends. This town is completely different from the night; it’s far from abandoned. There were children in the streets playing baseball and mothers walking on the sidewalks with a bag of groceries in one hand and a curious toddler in the other. Everything looked so peaceful. It reminded me of my parents. I sit down on the curb to catch my breath. My mother would be inside making her delicious brownies. Everyone in town would have come over just so that they could take a few for later. She had the most beautiful features that a young mother could have. She had hair that was as black as mine; instead of long she had it cut short. She had silver colored eyes that could make any man listen to her every command. People had told me that I looked just like her, but they also told me that I had my father’s eyes. While she was inside baking, my father and I would be outside. He’d be teaching me how to protect myself out in the real world. Now I’m grateful that he taught me, otherwise I wouldn’t be alive. My thoughts were interrupted by the rumbling in my stomach. I thought I had taught my body how to control its needs until truly necessary. I stand up and begin to walk further down the street in search of someplace else to sleep tonight. While walking, I found an alleyway that seemed to have a market crushed between its walls. There may be a possibility that I could find someone to help and receive some type of payment. Across the alley from where I stood is an elderly woman. She had caught my eye, and she knew it. She beckons me to come to her. I couldn’t help but follow her direct orders. Something about her, pulled me toward her booth. Once I reach her stand, she grasped my wrist and placed two beautiful oranges into the palm of my hand. I look up into her aged eyes. “Thank you, Ma’am. Is there anything I can help you with? I do not deserve these oranges without any work.”
“You’re very welcome child.”
I take the oranges and put them in my duffle bag.
The woman shakes her head. “There is nothing for you to do here, child. But there is something very important. Take a seat, please.”She smiles at me gently, as she pats a chair beside her. I sit.
“My name is Marianne and I have a special ability to read everything in a person’s mind. I can see their past experiences as well as read their current thoughts.”
I laugh. I did not want to hurt this old woman’s feelings, for her own good, she must forget about these creatures that haunt the streets. I needed to leave this town and bring the deadly creatures with me. The people living within the walls of this small city, are innocent and do not need the demons here harming their children.
‘Darling, Everything will be fine. As I’ve said before I can read your current thoughts. We know what haunts the streets once the sun leaves until the next day. Nickolas, Rileigh and Matt have had the same issue as you are currently having. Let them help you, it would make life much easier for you and for them.’
I look into the woman’s eyes again and I could tell that she meant every word that she had said. “You’re are completely right, Marianne. It really was unintelligent of me to leave them behind like I did.”
“I know I am right, Alexandra.” I gave her a questioning look and she pointed to her head for the explanation.
“Thank you very much for your advice, Marianne. You are a very wise woman.” I smile at her as we stand. She nods and attends to a customer. I am dismissed. I walk out of the alley and head back toward the building that I left behind so blindly. Nickolas and Matt needed my help and I couldn’t abandon them like I had planned. My hand rose to touch the small silver necklace that my parents had given to me on the night they died. My hand feels nothing but flesh. Emotions flash through my body. I never lose control of them, but now I lost something that had my last memory of my loving parents! Tears form in the corners of my eyes.
“You left this.” Nickolas stood behind me, holding my necklace. I grab the jewelry from his hand.
“I can’t believe that you removed it from me while I was sleeping. That was a very inconsiderate move! You had no right to do that, Nickolas Kain!”
He raises his hand; ordering me to stop talking. “For your information, I found it on the staircase when I was trying to stop you from making the biggest mistake of your life! So don’t get all pissy with my Alexandra Lynn!”
I stare directly at him. “You do not tell me what is and is not the biggest mistake of my life. Last time I checked this was MY not life not yours. My biggest regret would be going to that damn dance with you and leaving my parents home alone! You know that damn well Nicki!” I cross my arms over my chest; taking deep breaths to calm myself down before I hurt him unintentionally.
“What did you just call me?” He asked in surprise.
“I said Nicki. Is that okay with you? Get off your high horse and stop acting you are such a big involvement in this mess.”
Before I knew what was happening, Nickolas wraps him muscular arms around me into a hug; refusing to let me go. “Al I’ve missed you so much.” He whispered in my ear.
