Tormented Dreams

Floating clouds melt into darkness
Frosted tears hit the ground
Masked hedges rustle crisply
A creaking gate beckons forward

Stepping into the misty woods
Shadows dance along the path
Where twisted trees mask the howling winds
Owls stalk their prey through the leaves.

Broken tracks that lead to nowhere
Distorted, obscured and uneven
We arrive at a house in the clearing
An aging fire burns ahead

Haunting flames that burn  the sky
The stench of death and decay
We can hear the whispers and snarling
As nightmarish shapes catch the light

Through crystal smoke we see the eyes;
Watching and waiting in anticipation.
We know we are bound for the darkness.
Ever in fear, ever in despair.

The torment that lies behind dreams.
