Reflections on life and death in Grossblank form.
Aromas from the kitchen bring fond memories
of olden days, when lilting laughter often rang
throughout this house in merriment as children played.
Too soon, the surging tides of time would sweep us all
away to meet our destinies prescribed by fate.

Abruptly, cancer came, corrupting weakened flesh,
and brought relentless pain to bear upon his soul,
until the angel’s wings that fly us home appeared,
compassionately taking him to heaven’s grace.

Today, our family assembles in that house
to share our grief and fond regard for time we had
with him, reflecting on the mysteries of life.

Author’s Notes:

1. The Grossblank is a new form created by Larry Gross in 2001. It has 12 lines of blank verse with 12 syllables instead of the usual 10, as demonstrated in the following link: http://jpicforum.info/threads/coyote-moon.6870/

2. You can learn more about the basic concept of blank verse with examples at the following link: http://literarydevices.net/blank-verse/
