I wrote this poem prior to arriving in Iraq. My inspiration was everyone asking me why?
I have never heard the question why
From so many that I love.

Why would you choose to fight?
Why is what you have never enough?
My answer, if I dont who will?
My life is not my own,
But the property of all, still
I am no hero, I am just tired
Of everyone crying while scared to act;
So I will brave the fire
To separate fiction from fact.

Why is it that you sacrifice
For a country that doesnt care?
My answer, and I hope it will suffice,
There is a quality of man, one I find is rare
The quality of hope, it is beyond compare.
When all is lost, the light grown dim
We pick ourselves up, shake off the pain
Charge back into battle on a whim;
Gather our courage and dance through the flames
Only to emerge breathless and terrified
In the prospect that we just might win the game.

Why chance your life, your love, your very soul
On the bet that you can win or survive the war?
Surviving and winning are never really goals.
The point is to enlighten our humanity, to help it soar,
Through the skies of sin and regret
And erase our past misconceptions
Dissolve us of all our debts.
For you see we are all human
And each of us have flaws;
Let us rise above our differences
And lend that helping hand when our brothers fall.

Why is it you believe in the impossible while
your back is against the wall?
My answer is simple, faith in my fellow man.
We can do anything regardless of where the chips fall
We just suck it up and pack it in
And move on with the fight.
We take it to our enemies home with the shadow of the night.
We dig our trenches and plan our flights,
And somewhere in the sleepless hours,
Of contemplation and self doubt
We rise, yet again victorious, and that my friends is what it is all about!!
