Reflections on the meaning and purpose of life...tell me what you think! |
Life - a short and simple word indeed but does anyone really knows its significance? Every individual must have at a particular instant in his lifetime questioned himself about the purpose of his life. If it is true that nobody can choose where to be born, what we become eventually is in our hands. Our family, our physical and social environment - these are things that we did not choose. On the other hand, what we make of these things, the relationships we build, our personality; we are the sole masters of these. Different individuals have different approaches to the meaning and purpose of life and this is what makes each individual unique. There are some people who consider themselves to be the masters of their destiny. They set themselves some important goals and are prepared to work an entire lifetime to achieve them. Their aims in a way bring meaning to their life and are what matter the most to them. When they do not succeed they keep on working harder and always blame themselves. It is as if they have come to accomplish something and will try their best to attain their ambition. Others let destiny control them. They do aim at something but when they feel they are unable to attain their goals, they give up and let destiny govern them. They tell themselves that it was not meant to happen. Since they think that there is an external force (destiny) having control on their life they lack the perseverance required to face the challenges. These people are easily influenced by others and often feel that they are not at the command of their life. Religions preach people how to live. The common principle of every religion is that one has to do good so as to enjoy a future full of prosperity. "One reaps what one has sown" - this is the idea behind. Religious beliefs and principles influence the life of many people. They abide strictly to what their religion preaches and it gives a sense of direction to their life. What is the meaning and purpose of life? There is indeed no specific answer to this philosophical question. Everyone tries to propose his own explanation. But we can never be sure that what we say is the absolute truth. However what can be said is that one has the duty to fulfill all the roles assigned to him during his lifetime. Shakespeare's philosophy of life is the best that I could find. "The world's a stage. And all men and women merely actors. They have their entrances and exits. And one man in his time plays many parts." |
