Interesting question. I had the dolls custom-made, by a group in a nearby city.
There's a lady who used to be a Doctor, there. She found, with her patients, that many of them were ill due to poverty -- malnutrition and things. So she realised that to improve their health, she had to bring them out of poverty.
She has started a doll making unit now, and employs thirty women to make dolls.
These were made for me with the specifications -- must wear glasses and must have a dark skin tone that Indian children can relate to. They didn't actually have 'glasses' in their existing design, they created it for me!
