My Closest Central African Friend, Chantal
Aug 10 2009 at 2:44pm EDT
Chantal ran a small coffee stand on the side of the road to the hospital where I worked in the maternity ward. She sold café au lait sweetened with Nestle condensed milk and hot beignets fried in a caldron of oil atop a three stone fire that were to die for. At first, I caused quite a scene sitting there with the villagers drinking my coffee, but with Chantal's help we all got used to each other, I was eventually adopted as one of their own. I learned a lot about village life sitting there, and I developed a wonderful friendship with Chantal that lasted until the day I left.
