Did you know that the title for who created the crossword puzzle is disputed?
The first little puzzles appeared in the early 19th century and the first "word cross" puzzle of our modern time was published on Dec 21 1913 in the New York World paper. It was created by Arthur Wynne from Liverpool, England. He worked in the US from age 19 and when working for this paper, the editor asked him to create a game for the entertainment page. His first one was diamond shaped and he added different variations including the horizontal and vertical lines and adding the black and white squares as time went on. Now called a crossword, the word first appeared in the Oxford dictionary in February 1933.
So why not join history and share some research in a puzzle! Or challenge yourself by solving one.

What about a Word Search Puzzle?
Also known as Word Find, and Wonderword, it was designed and published by Norman E. Gibat in the Selenby Digest in 1968, although the Spanish puzzler, Pedro Ocon De Oro created Sopas des lettras a little earlier. In Norman Oklahoma, where they began, books were sold at Safeway and became popular with schools as well. They are pretty easy to make and relaxing to play here at WDC.
