Letter from the editor

As one year draws to an end, another approaches and people start to consider either what they have accomplished, or what they would like to do in the next 12 months. End of year is both a great time for reflection and a good time to start planning for the possible future. This isn't something limited to diet goals either. As writers, I'm sure many of us had goals and plans for what we wanted to accomplish writing wise. This could have been writing, rewriting, editing or even publishing and really anything in between. While we have some time to reflect on all that we've written in 2019, it is also a good time to start considering what we want to accomplish in the next several months/year.

Not everyone is a planner and that's okay. If you're more of a let it flow, write whenever the breeze feels right then keep on doing you. However, if you are struggling to reach your goals for writing and/or you just happen to like to make goals and schedules, then consider some planning options.

Pick a time to write. Sounds simple but it can be a challenge, especially if you've gotten to a place where writing seems to only happen in a certain spot, with a certain type of background noise, with only one pen (for those that write with pens still) or when a particular bit of inspiration strikes. It's certainly not wrong to write with limitations or specifications, however, it can hold back progress at times. If you really want to write more and/or have the goal of getting things done in 2020, it might be helpful to start putting a specific time of day/week set aside just for writing. Some advise to treat it much like a job or something that requires a regularly scheduled appointment, even if it's something that doesn't create a current income. If you set aside specific times and make it a priority, then you might find it easier to make progress.

Set aside time for editing. It's not just the first draft that needs devotion and a schedule. For those of us that multi-task and do many different stories, you might have times of the day or week for writing and other times set aside for other aspects that include the very important element of editing. This could be just after you finish a story, take a designated break then schedule time for the edits. It could be interwoven within every week depending on where you are at with different projects. The idea is to figure out a way to put aside time for what you need to accomplish and then, stick to those plans.

Whether it's world building, doing the side work when getting ready to self-publish, looking up cover art, there are many things that can be done in relation to writing. Sure, some can also lead to minor distractions from the task of producing a finished product but if you plan your time well enough, there is even room for a little fun and maybe even time spent on facebook or instagram. Have to keep up that social media presence, of course. So, if you're a planner, I'm sure you're all set to start getting your schedule ready for the new year. If you're not, consider trying it out for January and see what you can accomplish. Enjoy writing and have a happy new year.

Ask & Answer

Do you schedule time for writing, editing and other writing aspects?

Months ago, I discussed writing groups and social opportunities in the For Authors newsletter. Here are a couple comments sent in over the topic:

The #WritingCommunity on Twitter is growing and is very supportive, even if they do tend to do the "Writer's Lift" things too often to raise other people's followers...

In Michigan, there are a few writing groups at the libraries. I go to one in Shelby township that meets every Thursday 6 pm to 8pm and one in Sterling Heights.

Writing web sites are also social ones. Indeed it is a good idea to adhere to a group and connect with other members. It is an interesting friendship towards such web sites. Concerning novels, I didn't know that there is a month novels. I so want to evolve in writing books. It is a featured issue indeed.
