Make a Battle Plan!
My spouse and I bought a sofa this week, and with any major purchase, it was a big ordeal. (As I type this, I'm waiting for it to be delivered. So exciting!)
It made me think about it can be good to plan for things like entering or hosting contests.
Assess your needs. Just like picking out a piece of furniture or a car or a house, entering or hosting a contest could use some consideration first! Figure out how much time will be needed. Often contests are one-offs, but sometimes they're a commitment to writing several pieces or working with a partner. Hosting a contest is even more work! Take a look at your life and what you can handle, as well as what you'd like to do. Once you decide how much time you can commit, stick to your budget!
Research. I'm a huge fan of research. I like knowing what I'm getting myself into, you know? It's a good idea to research a contest or activity - look at reviews (search the contest name on the public review page to see if there are any public reviews), look at past entries and winners. Perhaps even look at reviews given by the judges to get an idea of their style! In hosting a contest, it can be good to do some research into the type of activity you're looking to host. Are there similar activities going on?
Ask for help. Don't be afraid to ask questions! More often than not, members on WDC will be more than willing to help answer a question if they can!
Enjoy! One of the steps people often forget when planning (myself included) is to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labors. I mean, if you like planning, I guess you'll get enjoyment out of that part, too, but don't forget to have fun, too!
As always, keep on writing!
