There are so many contests that at times, I've found myself in a situation where I want to write for several and the deadlines are fast approaching. Then comes the panic and struggle to make a decision if have to pick one or two over the rest in order to get anything done. It can be a real struggle.
One of the great things about the user based site is that we can not only create our own stores (poems and etc), or read those others have created, but we can also provide an outlet for others. It's a community in many different ways. Contests are one sector where creative minds merge together and there are so many different options available. With the user created, maintained and controlled elements, however, there are some issues that can come up when you plan to enter one or many.
First, you have to know about and find the contests. Using "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" [E] can help because the purpose is to promote contests. Taking part in groups and getting to know other writers on the site can give you ideas of what is out there as well since they can post and make recommendations. Knowing about a contest is an important step. Then when one catches your fancy, you can check out the prompts, create something that fits the rules and enter.
However, what happens when you find several contests that have interesting prompts? What if they have a similar deadline? How do you pick which contest to enter?
I don't have specific answers to the questions, unfortunately. There are times when I can stay up late or find a way to get enough written to feel the entries are strong enough to enter all of the contests that caught my attention. Other times, I can't pick which idea should get more attention so end not able to make a single deadline. It can become a hit or miss situation. So, for this newsletter I'm bringing up a topic just to put out in the sphere for you all to consider.
Are there times when you see many contests you want to enter at the same time? How do you decide which ones to enter? Let us know and talk to other writers here in the community. |
